ROBERT HANNEMAN PROFESSIONAL HUNT ADVISOR RESEARCH SPECIALIST I t’s hard to believe that November has crept up so quickly! I find myself asking, “Where has the 2016 hunting season gone?” It feels like just yesterday I was in Montana with my bow in hand, chasing elk. This year’s hunting season has been a blur since all of the Professional Hunt Advisors have been spread out throughout the West, learning new country and trying to notch tags on quality animals. I have run into many Huntin’ Fool members in the field and have even shared a CODY DRAPER WITH HIS COLORADO BUCK 8 few fires with them. There is something special about being part of the Huntin’ Fool community. Every time I run into a Huntin’ Fool member, I know that I am talking to someone who shares the same passion for the outdoors that I do. To the staff here at Huntin’ Fool, November means one thing – the deer are rutting. It doesn’t matter if you chase mule deer or whitetail, November is not a month to miss if you like fast-paced action. This year, I plan on spending the middle of November chasing rutting mule deer in the Missouri River Breaks in Montana. The mule deer population in eastern Montana is increasing since the winter kill back in 2011. I had the chance to hunt there in 2015, and even though the population was down, there were still some good bucks available. Hopefully the mule deer population in eastern Montana will get back to its historic levels, but with the way Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks loves to issue doe tags, it may never get back to the pre-winter kill numbers. Speaking of rutting bucks, I am excited to see what Garth Jenson and Jeff Warren turn up in Colorado during their third season hunt. With the late dates of the Colorado third season this year, they should see plenty of rutting bucks. Unfortunately, I did not draw a tag in Colorado this year, but I did find a couple of Colorado muzzleloader deer landowner tags listed on our website. After a quick call to my cousin, Cody Draper, I contacted the landowner and we each purchased a muzzleloader deer tag. Cody and I grew up in Fernley, Nevada and have been hunting and trapping together ever since I can remember. Every year, we try to do at least one hunt together, and this year, the middle of September found Cody and me glassing bucks in Colorado. We had a great time, as always, but the hunt was tough and we struggled until the hunt came down to the wire. In the end, we were able to find and harvest two great bucks during our muzzleloader hunt. Like many of us do, we shared pictures from this hunt on Facebook and Instagram where our community of hunters all enjoy sharing and seeing adventures from the field. If you had a successful hunting season this year, share it with us and fellow Huntin Fool members on our social media and by submitting a story and photos for our magazine. To submit your successful harvest story and photos, email them to submit@huntinfool.com. We look forward to sharing in your success! ROBERT’S BUCK FROM COLORADO
