HUNT DETAILS:
These black bear hunts take place in the Bitterroot National Forest and can be physically demanding. Terrain across the valley varies enormously, from rolling foothills and flat logging roads up into some of the steepest rocky avalanche chutes and high mountain basins in the range. Bears key on the fresh green feed that comes on with warmer weather, and they take full advantage of it, which is what makes them findable. A typical day starts early with still hunting old logging roads or ridges above lush creek bottoms and natural grassy clearings. Afternoons are spent on vantage points where a guide can pick apart a lot of country with optics. Once a bear is spotted the race begins, because bears are unpredictable and can change course or slip into timber without warning. Getting into position fast is the whole game, and hunters should be ready to move when it happens. Hunters in decent shape will get more out of the week.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Meals and lodging are the hunter's responsibility on this hunt. Hamilton, Montana is the nearest town to the hunting area and where hunters typically base themselves, with motels, restaurants, and services all available there. Hunters book their own rooms and cover their own food for the length of the stay, which gives full flexibility on where to stay, what to spend, and when to eat. It also means arranging things ahead of time, since rooms in town can fill up. Hunters should confirm the daily meeting point and start time with the outfitter before booking so the drive each morning stays reasonable.
