These hunt will take place on the Bitterroot National Forest. This is an expansive region, consisting of roughly 1 million acres and is located on the Western half of Montana along the Idaho border. The massive area encompassing both the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountain Ranges which is commonly known as the Bitterroot Valley. This can be a very rewarding public land hunt. Hunters will be day hunting out of a Local Hotel or Air BnB in Darby, Montana. If you are physically prepare prior to this hunt and show up in decent shape, it will help put the odds in your favor of finding success. They utilize 4x4's trucks to reach certain trailheads and start hiking before daylight to be into the areas that are known to hold elk. You will typically post up at glassing locations early in the mornings, to watch for elk movement. They typically pack a lunch and will spend the day on the mountain but things can vary each day depending on weather and the hunting conditions. This is not a trophy bull elk hunt. Most of their hunters that are presented with shots, are at mostly small to averaged size but respectable public land bulls in the 200 - 250” range, with a small possibility of a larger 260 - 270”+ bull, but a bull of that caliber tends to be tougher to find. All veteran public elk hunters know that any bull elk on public land is a good bull. If you're the kind of hunter that enjoys exploring new country every day, simply getting off of the beaten path, stretching / pushing your legs, and take pride in working hard to take home a freezer full of wild elk meat, than this is the elk hunt for you!
