HUNT DETAILS:
Rocky Mountain elk are not what most people associate with Texas, but after being wiped out in the early 1900s they have re-established in the rugged mountains of West Texas, and hunters can now pursue free-range bulls in the Lone Star State. This outfitter has exclusive access to some of the best elk habitat in the state, ground with both high elk density and real trophy quality. Bulls scoring three hundred inches and better are common here, and every year produces bulls over three hundred thirty. Elk on these ranches are managed to keep pressure low, which makes mature bulls far more responsive to calling than they would be otherwise. The terrain is rocky and covered in thorny vegetation, but elevations run only three thousand to five thousand feet, far lower than typical western elk country, which makes this accessible to a wide range of physical abilities. Expect high-desert conditions and heat. Hunts run four days, primarily one on one.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Hunters stay in a local ranch house or a nearby Airbnb, whichever sits closest to the hunting location. The accommodations are simple rather than fancy, but they are comfortable and welcoming, and they give hunters a real place to relax at the end of a long day. Meals are covered as well, usually prepared by the guide, and the food runs to the direct and satisfying end of things rather than anything elaborate. The point of the setup is to remove hassle. Nobody has to book a room, find a restaurant, or plan logistics on arrival, which leaves the entire trip focused on hunting.
