Huntin' Fool Showcase

November 2020
Story by Russ Davis
State: Wyoming
Species: Moose - Shiras

In January of 2019, it was time to apply for Wyoming moose. I had 20 preference points and was point chasing a unit with one non-resident tag. I phoned the only outfitter in the unit. He informed me he had received a deposit from a non-resident hunter who had 21 points. That meant I had no chance in drawing this tag. I did some extensive research and Bald Mountain Outfitters kept coming up as a top moose outfitter. I looked at their website, phoned some references, and talked with Terry Pollard, the outfitter. I applied for unit 25 based on higher tag numbers, booked with Bald Mountain Outfitters, and crossed my fingers. The draws came out, and I drew a once-in-a-lifetime tag.

October finally arrived, and I was in Pinedale to meet Terry Pollard and guide, Cody Wilson. The first day and a half, we looked over about 13 mature bulls. Some would have been shooters but had broken points or broken palms, so I passed on them. For the afternoon hunt, we drove a good hour to a different private ranch. Cody spotted two bulls bedded only 60 yards away, and one was hidden in the willows. This bull stood up and walked out. Right away, he looked nice. I shot the bull behind the front shoulder with my .300 Ultra Mag. He soaked up the hit and walked about five feet behind some willows. He stood there for 30 seconds and then slowly just laid down. I moved my position to set up for a second shot. The bull stood and started to walk when I shot him again behind the shoulder. He went down and never got back up.
