LODGING:
Their lodging is an old homesteaded ranch house built from lodge pole pine trees which were hand hewed from the timbers in the surrounding wilderness. Although the exterior of the house is dressed in siding, the inside still bears the logs that were all formed by hand back in the day! The three bedroom lodge sleeps 7 comfortably, and is used for their smaller more quaint groups. When the weather gets bad, which it will in the later seasons, they have a washer and dryer so you can be as comfortable as possible out in the elements, 1 full bathroom with an awesome shower (an authentic 1800's outhouse available as well). There is a comfortable living room with Direct TV and high speed wireless internet, and a kitchen with all the cooking utilities needed to make sure you are well fed by their in camp cooks. There is also a private rustic cabin available for couples or clients wishing to have a bit more privacy, the cabin is located around 100 yards from the main lodge.
RIFLE HUNTS:
You will have the opportunity to hunt four private ranches (55,000 acres) along with approximately one thousand acres of BLM land which reaches up to an altitude of well over 10,000 feet. Their elk hunts are fair chase and the terrain and scenery are breathtaking. With only 36% of the County being private property, pressured elk seek out the protection of private lands for safety, which is where the majority of their hunting takes place. Their ranches are on the fringes of the timber and offer significant agriculture opportunities making this prime free range elk habitat and very productive for their hunters. The elk herd stands at almost 20 bulls for 100 cow elk and the Colorado Department of Wildlife’s studies show this ratio is increasing, which means your opportunity for a bull is significantly higher than public lands throughout other parts of Colorado. Recent studies have shown that the harvest success rate for all elk across the state was around 18%, in recent years their success rate was far better than the state average.
If you choose this option, you will be hunting in Rifle units 17/171 (archery is a state-wide over the counter tag, so no unit is assigned). This region is comprised of over a million acres and holds one of the strongest elk migration routs in the state of Colorado. In fall and early winter the herd, which is estimated at over 10,000 strong, migrate down from the surrounding local mountain ranges and as far away as the Rocky Mountain National Park and move directly through our private hunting ranches towards a National Wildlife Refuge located less than 10 miles to the north of their elk ranches where they will winter until spring. The Northern region area offers open sagebrush country, willow flat marshes surrounded by aspen, fir, and pine forests all reaching up to elevations beyond the tree line. With breath-taking views of Parkview Mountain to the south, the Never Summer Mountain Range and the Continental Divide to the southeast, and the rugged Buffalo Peaks to the west, you will truly find your place in the world!
ARCHERY HUNTS:
Their archery elk hunts take place during the month of September in North Central Colorado. Archery Elk Hunts provide the opportunity to employ a variety of hunting methods ranging from spot and stalk, calling in screaming bulls, sitting on wallows, stalking on well used game trails, and sitting over large willow choked river bottoms. Their Archery Elk Hunts require the client to be in good overall physical condition as to be extremely mobile on foot. The archery game is getting as close as you can, similar to their Muzzleloader Elk Hunts. They recommend you to be extremely accurate out to 60 yards with your bow, which means lots of practice prior to your hunt. They will work to get their clients within 40 yards and like shots of 50 yards or under. The reason they ask clients to be accurate out to 60 yards is to ensure proper shot placement at 20 - 60 yards.
You will have the opportunity to hunt 55,000 acres of our private strictly managed ranches with many different types of terrain as their private ranches provide thousands of acres of heavy dark lodgepole pine timber, aspen groves, willow choked creek bottoms, hay fields, and rolling sage hills. Elevations start at 8,800 feet above sea level, and stretch up to around 10,000 feet, so while they recommend that you prepare physically for your hunt, you will not be hiking any steep terrain above timberline as most of their archery areas are rolling hills that surround the North Park Valley floor. Their ranches provide everything the elk need during this time of year: food, water, cover, and breeding grounds. They’ve had many mornings where they’ve watched bull after bull pile out of the timber into open creek bottoms to square off at each other and fight tooth and nail for the dominance of the herd.
September 2 - September 30?Hunt Code: Either Sex: OTC (Over the Counter) License. Mid-August to Early October is the breeding season for elk, “The Rut.” The most intense part of the rut is late August through late September, hence the reason they love muzzleloader so much, the elk are more vulnerable during this time. They are 100% focused on mating and can be extremely vocal by bugling. This provides the client with a unique opportunity to get close to a screaming herd bull which will make the hair on the back of your neck stand straight up and will send a rush of adrenaline through your body like you’ve never experienced before! If you have not been in the timber with a herd bull screaming at the top of his lungs, you’re in for a treat! Group sizes range from 4 - 6 hunters, with a 2:1 client/guide ratio. They limit this hunt to 12 spots over a 3-week period. This is a 5-day hunt which includes meals and lodging.
MUZZLELOADER HUNTS:
Their Muzzleloader Elk Hunts take place during the month of September in North Central Colorado. Muzzleloader Elk Hunts provide the opportunity to employ a variety of hunting methods ranging from spot and stalk, calling in screaming bulls, sitting on wallows, stalking on well-used game trails, and sitting over large willow-choked river bottoms. Their Muzzleloader Elk Hunts require the client to be in good overall physical condition and to be extremely mobile on foot. ??Colorado requires all muzzleloader hunters to hunt without the use of a scope and you can not use sabots. This game is to get as close as you can, similar to their Archery Elk Hunts. They recommend you to be extremely accurate out to 100 yards with your muzzleloader, which means lots of practice prior to your hunt, both in shooting and quick loading just in case a follow-up shot is needed. They will work to get their clients within 70 yards and like shots of 80 yards or under. The reason they ask their clients to be accurate out to 100 yards is to ensure proper shot placement at 20 - 80 yards. This provides you with the greatest chance at downing and recovering your elk.
They host group sizes ranging from 4 - 6 hunters with a 2-to-1 client/guide ratio. They limit this hunt to 2- 4 clients over a 9-day period. This is a 5-day hunt that includes meals and lodging. COW ELK HUNTS:
Their Private Land Only (PLO) Rifle Cow Elk Hunts take place in Mid-Late August in North Central Colorado. PLO (Private Land Only) Cow Elk Hunts provide the opportunity to employ a variety of hunting methods ranging from spot and stalk, stalking on well used game trails, sitting over large willow choked river bottoms and vast fresh cut hay fields. This hunt requires the client to be in good overall physical condition as to be extremely mobile on foot, or patient as they sit and glass for the herds for morning and afternoon hunts. Group sizes range from 4 - 6 hunters, with a 2:1 or 3:1 client/guide ratio. They limit this hunt to 12 spots over a 3-week period. This is a 3-day hunt which includes meals and lodging.
Their private land cow elk hunts are mid-Late August RIFLE Cow Elk Hunts that are available on their private ranches as part of a partnership with their landowners and Colorado Parks & Wildlife. These hunts are private land only, they are NOT available anywhere else in the state of Colorado; they have these hunts available in order to help manage the large herds of cow elk that live on their ranches in spring, summer, and fall, harvesting a target of 20 cows each year during this season helps keep these herds from overgrazing the high-country hay fields that make up a good portion of the lower elevations of their ranches. You will have the opportunity to hunt 55,000 acres of private land consisting of willow bottoms and hay fields along with sparse timer flats. These are 0-point draw tags that you can purchase as a leftover tag on most years, they are “Class B Tags”, so you can still purchase or draw your “Class A” Bull license and have twice the meat and twice the fun hunting!!! This hunt is fantastic for young and older hunters as well as both beginners and experienced hunters. August/September RIFLE Cow Elk Hunts are incredible, touting a 85% opportunity rate over the last 5+ years. The meat is delicious! This hunt will allow you to fill your freezer early and save your bull tag for a nice big bull when you can hunt with confidence knowing that your freezer is already full of prime organic, non-GMO, late summer cow elk meat. This hunt is just as exciting as any Bull Elk hunt!
