ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter is owned and operated by a lifelong resident of Mora, New Mexico, who was born and raised there and has spent his entire life hunting and working the mountains and ranches of the northern part of the state. He began guiding as a teenager and has run his own outfitting business for roughly ten years. Elk and mule deer are the species pursued. The knowledge behind the operation comes from decades of watching these animals through every season, learning migration corridors, bedding areas, feeding locations, water sources, and how weather moves game. The guides on staff know the Mora and Chacon country the same way, and the operation is personal rather than high volume.

HUNT DETAILS:
Every hunt here takes place on private land, and that single fact shapes everything else. Private access means dramatically less pressure than public-land elk hunting, so hunters are not competing with crowds, vehicles, and other outfitters for the same ground. Elk on these ranches move and behave naturally rather than being pushed into hiding, which is what makes a cow hunt here productive. The country centers on the Chacon Mountain and Mora region of northern New Mexico, south of Las Vegas. It is rugged mountain terrain, a mixture of timber, open parks, mesas, draws, and ranchland that makes outstanding elk habitat. Guides spend considerable time learning how elk are using each ranch, which herds are where, and when they move. Most of the hunting is glassing feeding areas and hillsides and intercepting elk as they travel between feed and bedding. The number of hunters taken is kept low, so the ranches stay quiet.
