ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter is owned and operated by a lifelong resident of Mora, New Mexico, who was born and raised there and has spent his entire life hunting and working the mountains and ranches of the northern part of the state. He began guiding as a teenager and has run his own outfitting business for roughly ten years. Elk and mule deer are the species pursued. The knowledge behind the operation comes from decades of watching these animals through every season, learning migration corridors, bedding areas, feeding locations, water sources, and how weather moves game. The guides on staff know the Mora and Chacon country the same way, and the operation is personal rather than high volume.
HUNT DETAILS:
Every hunt here takes place on private land, and that single fact shapes everything else. Private access means dramatically less pressure than public-land elk hunting, so hunters are not competing with crowds, vehicles, and other outfitters for the same ground. Elk on these ranches move and behave naturally, which matters enormously when the target is a mature bull. The country centers on the Chacon Mountain and Mora region of northern New Mexico, south of Las Vegas. It is rugged mountain terrain, a mixture of timber, open parks, mesas, draws, and ranchland that makes outstanding elk habitat. Guides spend considerable time locating bulls and learning how elk are using each ranch. When bulls are vocal, hunters may hear bugling across the valleys and heavy cover. When they are not, the hunting shifts to glassing feeding areas and open slopes and intercepting elk between feed and bedding. The number of hunters taken is kept low, so the hunting stays personal and the ranches stay quiet.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Hunters stay in clean, well-equipped campers located close to the private ranches being hunted. That proximity is the point. It cuts out unnecessary driving and puts more of the day into the field rather than onto the road. The campers give hunters a comfortable base to prepare gear, eat, rest between hunts, and talk through the next day’s strategy with their guide. The atmosphere is practical and built around the hunting rather than around luxury. For a lot of hunters the evenings around camp end up being among the best parts of the trip, going back over the day and planning the next one.
