HUNT DETAILS:
This outfitter works an area of Kodiak with a high density of mountain goats. The island does not give anything up easily. Thick brush and steep mountains make for hard going, and weather dictates a great deal of what happens on any given day. That said, a hunter in good condition can expect daily opportunities to get after goats when conditions allow. Much of the work starts from camp itself, since most goats can be glassed from there and a plan built around a specific billy before anyone leaves. Sitka blacktail deer are abundant on the same ground, and because most goat hunters here also want a deer, the outfitter built this as a combination hunt. Taking both species on one trip is a realistic outcome rather than a bonus. Few places let a hunter pursue two species this different from the same camp, and that is the real appeal of this trip. Hunters should arrive fit and prepared for wet, steep, brushy country.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Camp is an unusual mix of yurts and a cabin, and the combination works well on Kodiak, where weather is the defining factor. When the elements turn, and they will, hunters have somewhere warm and dry to wait it out rather than lying in a soaked tent. Meals are prepared by one of the guides or the camp jack, and the food has a reputation of its own. It runs hearty and satisfying, and nobody has left hungry. Between the shelter and the cooking, camp works as a real base rather than a place to merely survive the nights, which matters on a hunt this physical.
