Oregon Mountain Goat Hunting 2026

For 2026, there will be twenty-one mountain goat tags available in the draw. Goats are found in the stable country of Eastern Oregon, including Wallowa, Elkhorn, Strawberry Mountains, and the Central Cascades near Mount Jefferson. For non-resident applicants, Oregon will have two mountain goat tags available: one in Elkhorn No. 2 and one in South Snake River No. 1. ODFW estimates the population between 1,000 and 1,300 goats, but they remain very conservative on the number of goat tags they issue. Their goats have great genetics statewide. Every year, Oregon hunters enter goats into the Boone and Crockett record book. Oregon did produce a mountain goat in recent years that had an official score of 54”, which is the second largest goat ever harvested in the state.

2026 Oregon Mountain Goat Season Dates

The Elkhorn No. 2 hunt (hunt code 950A2) has 50”+ potential. The season dates for this hunt will be September 1–30, which is the second goat hunt on the unit. This is the best non-resident goat tag available as there are plenty of big, mature billies. The best goat killed in 2025 was 50”. This is a fairly easy mountain goat hunt in comparison to other states. Some hunters will backpack in from the bottom to access goats, but there is an ATV trail that can take hunters to the top, allowing them to hunt either way. There are good hiking trails throughout the area. This hunt is physically easier than the South Snake. That said, if you are looking for a record book goat, you may still want to hire an outfitter. There are Boone and Crockett goats alive on this unit. Non-resident draw odds in 2025 were 11.80%. There are a total of nine goat tags on this unit between the three seasons.

The South Snake River No. 1 hunt (hunt code 959B1) has 50”+ potential. The season dates for this hunt will be September 1–30. This unit was combined with the Hat Point unit in 2024. The population is down in the Hat Point unit, but mature billies are still available. On the Hat Point portion of the unit, there is good road access to the top of the rim where hunters can glass mountain goats below in the steep country. You will have to lose anywhere from 1,500 to 4,000 feet in elevation to kill your goat, and you’ll have to pack it up the steep slopes to the top where you started. South Snake River area is much more remote, and hunters will be able to access the country by backpacking or riding in horseback. This area does hold some great goats, but you should expect a very physical hunt. An outfitter would be a good choice for this hunt. There are Boone and Crockett goats alive on this unit. Non-resident draw odds in 2025 were 11.80%. There are a total of four goat tags on this unit between the two seasons.

Oregon produces giant goats and the harvest success for all Oregon mountain goat hunts is typically run at 100%. The draw odds are tough, but—if you already have a hunting license—it’s only $10 to apply. There isn’t a point system in place for mountain goats, so everyone’s chances are equal every year. Oregon also raffles off a mountain goat tag, so don’t forget to buy a raffle ticket when you apply.
