Arizona Turkey Hunting 2023

Available Arizona Turkey Hunts --- Search HF Aventures

Arizona has three different species of turkey available to hunt – Merriam’s, Rio Grande, and Gould’s. Merriam’s are the most prominent among the three, but it is the Gould’s turkey that gets most of the spotlight and often takes 20+ bonus points for residents to draw in the max point draw. The main reason for this phenomenon is that Arizona is the only state in the U.S. that currently has a state draw for Gould’s turkey. New Mexico has two special permits that are issued through a raffle and an auction, but they are not state draw permits. The only other option to hunt the Gould’s turkey is by purchasing a hunt in Mexico, which typically costs between $3,500 and $5,000 for the hunt itself, not including travel and transport of the turkey back to the U.S.

There are a total of eight different units that have spring hunts. Units 29 and 30A are combined for a single hunting area. Each one of these hunt areas has two spring hunts conducted in May, with the exception of unit 33, which has an additional hunt. The other two traditional hunts have overlapping dates, but the first hunt has split season dates and the second hunt starts later and runs until the last part of May. Arizona is very conservative when it comes to tag allocation for Gould’s turkey tags, which ranges from 1 to 15 per hunt, depending on the unit. These hunts take between 16 and 25 points for residents to draw out in the bonus draw, but there are always random tags available. Currently, only hunts in unit 32 are off limits to nonresidents as there is only one tag issued for each hunt. Non-residents are limited to no more than one tag in any unit that has 19 tags or less. Currently, there is not an option for a non-resident to draw in the bonus draw for any Gould’s tags.
