Step Inside Huntin' Fool: Draw Success

August 2018
Author: Vanessa Hunt

At the heart of everything Huntin’ Fool does, our goal is to help members get out in the field and hunt. We provide resources on information about draw strategies, unit descriptions, top units, over-thecounter tags, and much more so that members can access a variety of ways to participate in the sport they all love. We love being able to celebrate members’ successful draws and successful harvests. In spite of increasingly difficult draw odds, our community regularly draws incredible tags, and we think it is worth celebrating anytime anyone is successful in a state draw or raffle.

The Huntin’ Fool Team works tirelessly to bring members the most up-to-date research on state and unit information so that members have the tools to create their best draw strategies. With that, we hope this brings the Huntin’ Fool community success each year during draw season. As we look at the draw results and our Member Draw database, it has become apparent that the Huntin’ Fool community draws a considerable number of tags each season. We credit this to the research our Team does, the relationships between our members and our Team, and the loyalty of Huntin’ Fool members.

The featured quotes are from a few Huntin’ Fool members and License Application clients who have drawn some great tags for the upcoming season. We wish them and all others who have drawn tags the best of luck on their hunts.

"This is indeed a 'Holy Grail' dream tag. Interestingly, I drew the only non-resident Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep tag on the Oregon side of Hell's Canyon for the 2009 season. I had only been applying for the Oregon tag for three years, and I had no clue as to the type of vertical terrain I was getting into when I drew the tag. Huntin' Fool was very helpful as were the members of Oregon WSF and the Oregon senior sheep biologist, Vic Coggins. Very diplomatically, several sources pointed me towards one man, Jon Barker. We hunted hard and have been great friends ever since. The first ever sheep hunt was a success in more ways than one. I was seriously bitten by the 'sheep bug.'

I called my friends at the WSF office in Bozeman and I also called my buddy and well-known guru Jon Barker asked if they knew if anyone else had drawn the random draw tag for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep on both sides of Hell's Canyon. I am apparently the only individual to randomly draw the Oregon and Idaho tags to date. Jon was my guide in 2009 on the Oregon side for my very first sheep hunt, and now this year, which will be sheep hunt #7, I get to to hunt with him again. It will be a very fun time!" - Gordon Lyons, Huntin' Fool Member & License Application Client Drew, drew the Idaho unit 11 Rocky Mtn bighorn sheep tag

"It took me 14 years to draw my Colorado sheep tag. On May 5th, I thought I should check my results and was amazed to see that I had drawn a sheep tag. In addition, I knew after 18 years that I was very close to drawing Wyoming sheep. I had saved back issues and stories from Huntin' Fool for units that I hoped to draw in the future and kept files. On May 10th at 10 a.m., I checked Wyoming and almost passed out when I saw that I had drawn Wyoming sheep. I had gone 18 years with no sheep tags and then had two within six days!

Huntin' Fool has been an instrumental part of my western hunting opportunities. They have incredible information on each state and very good research. I usually speak to the Hunt Advisors before applying for each state to get their perspective in addition to the magazine. Robert Hanneman has been a key advisor for the last several years, and he coached me on which unit to apply for. Also, Huntin' Fool members are the greatest source of information, and I have developed many great friends sharing information and helping each other. They are an incredible resource and are so wonderful to speak with and share information. A Huntin' Fool membership is the single most important resource a hunter should have, and they should utilize all of the Huntin' Fool research." - Brian McQuivey, Huntin' Fool Member, drew a Colorado Rocky Mtn bighorn sheep tag & a Wyoming Rocky Mtn bighorn sheep tag

"I have been with Huntin' Fool for probably 20 years because I have 20 points in a lot of states. I'd been trying to draw this Arizona elk tag for 20 years. I used some of your research, talked to guides and outfitters, and talked to other people to see where the best units are. I use your website a lot. It makes it easy to look at state odds and plan ahead. There is a lot of good information if you spend time looking at it.

I have been hunting for 40 years, and in my experience, there are three ways to kill a big animal - get a point every year, win a raffle tag, or pay the big bucks and purchase a Governor's tag. You just have to have patience. You've got to apply and get the points." - Freddie Zink, Huntin' Fool Member & License Application Client, drew an Arizona unit 9 early elk tag

"Robert Geib has been a sheep hunter for 40+ years and has harvested 30+ sheep from all over the world. He has been applying in North America for 20+ years and has the bonus points to prove it, but being from Chicago and having to apply as a non-resident makes it very difficult to draw. Robert and I started out applying on our own for many years and had difficulty with some of the timing, payment, and hunt choices. We then found another application service, but I felt they didn't provide the hunt unit experience that Huntin' Fool brought, so we moved our business to Huntin' Fool about five or six years ago and have been very impressed with the communication and help finding hte right hunt that fit the ability of the hunter and taking into consideration the trophy versus odds of draw ratio.

This is Robert's third North American sheep draw tag. The first two were in Idaho for California sheep and Wyoming for Rocky Mountain sheep. Most importantly, this will be his first Desert sheep hunt, which will complete his North American Slam. He had thought about going to Mexico or paying the huge fees to buy a rancher tag in Texas, but he decided he would wait for his shot at a draw and Huntin' Fool delivered. In my opinion, this is truly a miracle and I am so happy for him!

Robert is going to be 77 years old, and he is still in 'sheep shape.' We love hunting as a father and son and can't wait to get into sheep country. We owe this draw 100% to the team at Huntin' Fool. Without the help of their team, we would have never put Robert in for this hunt." - Chris Geib, License Application Clients, his father, Robert, drew a Nevada Desert bighorn sheep tag
