Polaris Ranger XP: The Most Capable UTV

Whenever I have the opportunity to visit a new ranch property in Texas, I jump at the opportunity. The rugged terrain, warm temperatures, and diverse wildlife make it an outdoorsman’s paradise. This year, the destination was the renowned Ox Ranch in West Texas where Polaris Off-Road was set to unveil their 2025 full-size Ranger XP models.

In the early 2000s, I was deeply involved in the off-road racing industry, participating in one of the first 1900 class teams to build baja race-ready side-by-side vehicles. Although these early models were a far cry from today’s advanced machines, it was clear that side-by-side utility vehicles were ready to revolutionize the consumer motorsports market. Polaris made a significant impact with their Ranger and RZR models, and they have continued to lead the way ever since.

Polaris proudly claims that their Ranger lineup is the “most capable, most comfortable, and most durable.” These are lofty promises, and the 2025 models certainly aim to meet them. A common sentiment I hear from hunters is that they’d “rather buy a Jeep” given the price of new utility vehicles. While this comparison has some validity, it’s important to recognize that these are entirely different machines. The Ranger can be easily trailered or integrated into your toy hauler setup, offering a unique blend of practicality and performance. If it’s been a few years since you’ve utilized a Ranger on a hunt, it’s probably time to revisit.

One of the standout features for me was the new transmission configuration, which provides a crisp, clear shifting mechanism. Previous models often had rough or ambiguous shifting, leaving you uncertain if the gear was fully engaged. Additionally, the electronic power steering in the 2025 models offers smooth handling and a return-to-center feature that makes driving feel more like operating your pickup truck than an off- road vehicle.

Practicality is crucial when choosing how to navigate in the field. While backpack-style hunts may necessitate parking your truck at the trailhead, side-by-side utility vehicles excel on motorized trails thanks to their adaptability and modern conveniences. In my home state of Arizona, I was always mindful of dust management on the trail and generally skeptical of enclosed cabs. However, the 2025 NorthStar edition has changed my perspective. This model’s cab effectively combats hot temperatures, cold winter days, and dust, making it a worthwhile upgrade in either the three-seat or six-seat models.

Air conditioning, dust-proof cab enclosures, and a squeak-free environment will make the ride a much different experience than you have probably had when compared to older Ranger models. We rode around the vast properties of Ox Ranch in 95-degree temperatures this summer in full comfort with the air conditioning system engaged and my favorite playlist going on the stereo.

A personal pet peeve of mine with off-road vehicles has been the need to replace many stock OEM parts with aftermarket upgrades, which can be costly and frustrating. Polaris has addressed this concern in the 2025 model by including a new roof, 29-inch all-terrain tires, an integrated winch, front bumper, and upgraded lights, eliminating the need for additional upgrades.

The 2025 Polaris Ranger XP models have set a new standard for utility vehicles, combining practicality and comfort without sacrificing the sporty feel with plenty of horsepower. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or an off-road enthusiast, these vehicles offer a compelling option for navigating the great outdoors.
