“Welcome to the Built to Hunt Podcast, brought to you by the team of Hunt Advisors at the Huntin’ Fool magazine.” That’s the intro you’ll hear when you hit play on the Built to Hunt Podcast, letting you know who the experts are that you’ll be listening to. As another year goes by and the application season is heating up, we are continually reminded that there are a multitude of options out there to get information, but you need to be cautious about who you’re getting your information from. “Fake news” is a trendy topic in today’s world, and unfortunately, it has also leaked into our beloved hunting community. I don’t want to beat a dead horse, but be careful who you trust as it doesn’t take anything more than an annual subscription to Huntin’ Fool, a flashy website, and a following on social media to be an “expert” these days. If you listen close enough, you can almost hear the pages turn.
Don’t get me wrong, we listen to other podcasts as well. Some are great, but others are the reason for this Soapbox. I think it’s time to call a spade a spade, whether it be pushing a product solely because a company is cutting them a check or being flat out wrong with their facts. An example is a recent podcast claiming, “Non-residents can just drive up to Maverik and buy a general elk tag in Wyoming.” There are more and more hunting podcasts popping up daily. A few signs that a podcast isn’t going to give you the most factual information are “Bro Science” and if the “expert” on the pod doesn’t know the answer, they just agree with the host even if he is wrong. To put this into frame, here’s an example from the podcast that triggered this Soapbox. When explaining Type 1, 2, and 9 elk licenses in Wyoming, the host said, “You can usually hunt archery on the type 1 permit, but type 2 is strictly a rifle hunt.” The expert responded with, “Correct.” However, this is incorrect. In fact, most type 2 hunts allow you to hunt the exact same archery dates as the type 1 hunters. Most type 2 hunts are very underutilized by hunters, and in many cases, type 2 permits are the same hunt with later dates or hunts with different boundaries and are easier to draw than most type 1 permits.
I’m not going act like it’s all sunshine and rainbows in our neck of the woods. I’m sure we have missed something here or there, but the reason the Built to Hunt Podcast is such a great resource to hunters of all experience levels is that the team of Hunt Advisors who do all of our state research are the ones who host the podcast. We are the ones talking to our over 400 Endorsed Outfitters, speaking with local biologists, listening and participating in commission meetings, reviewing previous years’ reports, and crunching data to fill the pages of our monthly publication. And we do this daily! This is what helps us stand out above the rest of the hunting podcasts. Besides all that, our podcast has the “sitting around the campfire” feel. There are nine Hunt Advisors on staff, and we all have our own opinions, which makes the conversation lively.
