The Best Part of the Outdoors

June 2018
Story by Maurene Linkous
Hunters: Chad Linkous
State: Alabama
Species: Turkey

My husband’s first turkey hunt in March 2015 in Union Springs, Alabama took place at a friend’s property. On that same day, Chad took a little time on the water fishing and caught a nice bass.

Later in December of 2015, my husband, Chad Linkous, was on a business trip and saw a lump on his neck in his rearview mirror. Before we knew it, he was diagnosed with cancer on January 18, 2016. The cancer was Stage IV. We were in a nightmare we soon couldn’t wake up from. We ended up having to move to Houston for four months to get his treatments at MD Anderson Cancer Center. We are pleased to say that he fought the battle and is cancer free thus far! He will be watched carefully for up to five years from his cancer-free diagnosis. It was a nightmare we will never forget. However, we’ve been blessed to help others.

I recently had a kidney transplant at UF Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida where we again had to move away for my treatments and care. Chad needed a much overdo getaway. We both love to hunt and fish. He’s been doing it since childhood. I’ve been able to go and have learned so much from him for a little over 20 years now.

Chad use to be well known in the Orange Beach, Alabama area for Billing Fishing Tournaments. (I guess he still is, but new generations are taking over.) In the past, he was a Private Captain for the boat “QUICK TIME” out of Orange Beach. The owner of the boat was Robert Burroughs from Laurel, Mississippi. They would fish tournaments in our Panhandle areas of Billing Fishing but also traveled to Key West, the Bahamas, and Mexico areas. With that, Chad has years of experience under his belt. You truly can’t put a price tag on the adventures, the sights, and the water during those years. I know because I got to see them too.

Chad has now been on the other side of fishing and hunting for over eight years. He’s a manufacturer representative for over 25 different companies. Some of them are top companies in both fishing and hunting. His knowledge has not only helped the fishing and hunting side of things, but he’s also helped his customers grow from his knowledge. Friends will say, "If Chad Linkous is saying it, you better take it like it’s written in gold!"

I am amazed all the time when I attend a few dinners with him related to his business. I listen and take it all in. It’s hard for me to imagine how much information he can keep loading in that brain of his. I just say, "Wow!" He’s a book of knowledge in so many ways.

For my husband to even have a weekend off during the turkey season is remarkable in and of itself. The weekends seem to be a challenge for the both of us, which we ended up having. The weekend he was available to hunt was a weekend I, of course, had something. Yes, it never fails. Even though our son is now 26, we still have a responsibility to a new pup. Only being about three months old, you can't just leave her with anyone. As the week went by, I ended up telling my husband to go on his turkey hunt. I knew he really wanted to go and he hadn't had a moment to even do so. He hadn't even had time to deer hunt. We used to go almost every weekend. It's not just the hunting, but the friendships and all of the cooking we do too.

In March 2018, it ended up being the perfect weather for the morning turkey hunt for my Chad and Chad Bull. It only took 30 minutes to get in position and call the turkeys out. My husband then got him another turkey. It was another exciting, successful hunt for him on the same property in Union Springs where he had taken his first turkey. The next day, it was Chad Bull's turn, but no luck. The last day was a bust due to the rain moving in. They are both looking forward to next season. I hope it works out for my husband to go.

The best part of the outdoors is enjoying it with the people you love! We so enjoy it all when we’re together.
