Huntin' Fool Showcase

August 2019
Story by Danielle Henrie
State: Utah
Species: Deer - Mule

My husband and I decided to go for a quick hike and see if we could find anything. We glassed for quite a while and saw some does and cow elk. We were getting ready to head back when he glassed up a buck in some thick quakies. We decided to get a better look, so we hiked to a ridge a little closer but lost him. The wind was blowing so hard, and it was raining leaves. We spent a few hours sneaking up and down the ridge, trying to find him in the quakies again.

The sun was just getting ready to set and something had spooked the does on the ridge, so they all started running. We found the buck again! He was feeding through the quakies. I had one opening only a few feet wide that I had to make a shot through as soon as he got to it. I waited for him to make his way over. He turned, and I dropped him in one shot at 250 yards. We hiked to him as quickly as we could since it was going to get dark quick. He was a giant 4x5. This was my biggest buck to date. I am not sure I will be able to top him on this unit. Thank you for this opportunity!
