“When compact or mini spotting scopes were first released, the buzz was felt across the hunting industry, but many features fell short of expectations. While the size and weight were perfect for backcountry hunters, the glass quality and eyepiece left much to be desired. Fast forward to this newest launch from Vortex, we find ourselves lightyears ahead from where we first started. This new compact spotter is under 2 pounds and can almost fit in your outer coat pocket.

Would I take this spotter on a Dall sheep hunt where I would expect to see annuli rings on the horn at distance? No. Would I use it on an elk hunt where I just need to confirm that the bull spotted has a decent frame with tine length that I wanted so I can begin my stalk? Yes. Oftentimes as hunters, we get caught up in carrying the largest glass available with us, but I’d recommend taking a step back and asking yourself if you just need to identify the target, get a closeup of what you saw in your binoculars, or if you really need to count the hairs between the whites of their eyes. In any case, you might want to add a Viper HD compact spotter to your lineup for this next season.” – Austin Atkinson, Hunt Advisor
