Arizona Elk and Antelope Application Strategies

Arizona is celebrated for offering some of the most sought-after elk and antelope hunting opportunities in North America, making it a valuable target for hunters looking for exceptional big game hunts. That said, navigating the application system and draw odds requires a thorough understanding of Arizona's process and strategies to optimize your chances. Below, we’ll detail the strategies and tips for mastering Arizona applications for elk and antelope hunting.

Arizona Hunting Application Process and Deadlines

The application deadline for the 2025 Arizona elk and antelope draw is 11:59 p.m. (Arizona time) on February 6, 2025. All hunters, resident and non-resident alike, must submit applications online at the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) website at www.azgfd.gov. Before applying, hunters should ensure they have a valid Customer ID and create a Portal account. This Portal is crucial for viewing draw results, updating credit card information, and accessing points data post-application.

Applicants must pay the following upfront fees at the time of the application:

  • $160 for a 365-day non-resident combination hunting/fishing license.
  • $15 non-refundable application fee per species.

Hunters have options to enroll in programs like PointGuard ($10 per species) or PointGuard Plus ($25 for all species), which provide additional flexibility should they need to surrender a tag prior to a hunt.

Successful applicants will have their permits mailed by April 3, 2025, and those who are unsuccessful will still benefit from earning bonus points for future draws.

Arizona Points System Explained

Arizona operates a bonus points system to help increase a hunter's odds of eventual success in the draw. Each eligible application that isn’t drawn earns a point for use in future applications. Here's a quick summary:

  • Standard Bonus Points are earned for unsuccessful applications.
  • Loyalty Points are awarded if you apply for a specific species for five consecutive years.
  • Ethically Hunting Arizona Points can be gained by completing Arizona's online education course.
  • Applicants may also apply for points-only for $15 per species, ensuring no chance of drawing but earning a bonus point.

Accumulated points translate to additional chances in the draw, improving odds of drawing tags.

Strategic Tips for the Draw

Understand the Non-Resident Quota: Non-residents are limited to up to 10% of the total tags for elk and antelope across all hunt codes. Within this quota, 5% is reserved for those with the highest bonus points, and the remaining 5% is randomly allocated. This limitation makes planning and applying strategically critical.

First Two Choices Are Key: Arizona considers an applicant’s first and second choices before moving on to the next applicant. If you’re targeting high-demand hunts, focus your strategy on maximizing value for these top two choices. Your third through fifth choices are rarely drawn except in undersubscribed areas.

Choose Your Units Wisely: Units managed under Alternative Management (e.g., Units 1, 9, 10, and 23) are renowned for top-tier trophy elk and have higher bull-to-cow ratios, but their tags are extremely hard to draw. By contrast, Standard Management Units may offer more moderate hunting experiences but provide better chances to obtain a tag sooner.

Group Applications: Arizona allows hunters to apply as a party (up to four individuals). Bonus points will be averaged across the group and rounded to the nearest whole number, providing an option for hunters to pool their points. However, ensure the group’s expectations align, as all members will either draw or not draw together.

Utilize the E-Tag Option: Hunters may select the electronic tagging option to manage their tags via a smartphone app rather than relying on a physical carcass tag. This option reduces paper waste and is suitable for tech-savvy users who want a streamlined process.

Enhancing Your Odds and Preparing for the Hunt

Target Late Season Hunts: While early-season elk hunts during the rut are highly sought after, late-season hunts typically require fewer points. Although challenging, these hunts allow hunters to gain familiarity with the unit and still offer opportunities to harvest a trophy bull if you’re willing to put in the effort.

Apply for Antlerless Elk Tags: Antlerless tags can often be drawn with lower points and provide an excellent opportunity for filling freezers with high-quality elk meat. Just understand that using points to draw an antlerless tag will reset your bonus points for all elk hunts.

Hunting Antelope in Arizona: Arizona’s limited pronghorn antelope population means the tags are incredibly coveted, and more like a once-in-a-lifetime hunt. Units like 5B, 5A, 4B, and 6A offer both trophy quality and good public land access. Hunters should, however, expect low populations and will need to find any vantage point to allow more coverage area with their glass to be successful.

Monitor Weather and Drought Conditions: Drought years can negatively impact elk antler growth and population health. Hunters applying for trophy hunts may wish to consider postponing until conditions improve to maximize the chances of encountering mature bulls.

Youth Opportunities: Arizona’s youth hunting program provides affordable opportunities for eligible hunters under 18. With reduced fees and dedicated juniors-only cow elk hunts, it opens the door for young hunters to experience big game hunting in a structured and supportive environment.

Final Thoughts

Arizona offers one of the most rewarding big game hunting opportunities in the country for those willing to invest both time and resources. The draw system, though competitive, ensures a fair chance at coveted permits, and understanding the points structure alongside proper planning is key to successful applications. Whether pursuing trophy elk, pronghorn antelope, or simply looking for an unforgettable hunting experience, Arizona remains a premier destination for dedicated hunters.
