Unit 1 hunts are located north and south of Juneau in the Berners Bay and Taku River water sheds. These are boat-based hunts for brown and/or black bear. This area has good numbers of both brown and black bears. There are a good number of color phase black bear, including Glacier bears.

The outfitter is a second generation commercial fisherman and is a Registered Hunting Guide. He has guided throughout many regions of Alaska, including Southeast Alaska, Brooks Range, Alaska Range, Western Alaska, Alaska Peninsula, and Kodiak. 2019 marked his 17th year guiding for brown bear, grizzly bear, black bear, Dall sheep, mountain goat, moose, caribou, wolf, and Sitka blacktail deer. Guiding in many different regions of the state has given him a vast knowledge of dealing with the many unique situations.
