ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter runs guided, fair-chase backcountry hunts in Montana. The species list is broad, covering elk, mule deer, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, cougar, and bison, with both rifle and archery options on several of them. Horses are central to the operation, and the string is well trained and mountain-savvy, which is what makes travel through this terrain practical. Every camp is remote and reachable only on foot or horseback, so hunters are in the backcountry rather than near it. Each hunter is paired with a professional guide skilled in horsemanship, first aid, and the behavior of the local game, which covers both the safety side and the success side of a hunt this far from a road.

HUNT DETAILS:
A mountain goat tag is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for most hunters, and this outfitter treats it that way. The guides here know the rugged high country where mature billies live intimately, and that familiarity is what has produced an outstanding success rate over the years. The focus stays on quality animals rather than filling a tag quickly. Most hunts begin with a horseback ride into a remote base camp, and from there hunters head out daily to glass and hike the terrain goats actually use. Locating a good billy is the first job and it can take time. Once one is found, the work shifts to planning and executing a stalk that gets the hunter into a shooting position without blowing the opportunity. Expect a physical hunt in classic goat habitat. Hunters should arrive in good condition and comfortable shooting at distance in steep terrain, since a goat hunt rarely offers a second chance at the same animal.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
Camp is set up with comfort in mind. Sleeping tents are heated and fitted with cots and foam mattresses, which after a day of climbing is exactly what a hunter needs. Camps use multiple tents and plenty of space, so hunters get privacy rather than being packed into one shelter. Meals are served family-style and prepared with real care, and the camp cooks put out generous, wholesome food that keeps hunters fueled through hard days. Worth noting as well, this outfitter makes a point of running a supportive and accommodating camp for women hunters and guests, which is not something every backcountry operation thinks through.
