This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter runs guided, fair-chase backcountry hunts in Montana. The species list is broad, covering elk, mule deer, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, cougar, and bison, with both rifle and archery options on several of them. Horses are central to the operation, and the string is well trained and mountain-savvy, which is what makes travel through this terrain practical. Every camp is remote and reachable only on foot or horseback, so hunters are in the backcountry rather than near it. Each hunter is paired with a professional guide skilled in horsemanship, first aid, and the behavior of the local game, which covers both the safety side and the success side of a hunt this far from a road.
HUNT DETAILS:
This outfitter hunts Montana units 300 and 501, two of the very few places left in North America where bighorn sheep permits are available on an unlimited basis. That alone makes this hunt unusual, since almost everywhere else a ram tag means a very long wait. Most hunts start with a horseback ride into a remote base camp, and from there hunters hike out daily to glass and work historic sheep country on foot. The outfitter runs two of these hunts a year, and both have consistently produced at least one ram annually. The difficulty is not understated. These areas are exceptionally rugged and demand real physical and mental endurance, and a hunter in above-average shape who is prepared to hunt hard has above-average odds. Hunters should train seriously for this one, and should understand that an unlimited permit does not mean an easy ram.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Camp is set up with comfort in mind. Sleeping tents are heated and fitted with cots and foam mattresses, which after a day of climbing in sheep country is exactly what a hunter needs. Meals are served family-style and prepared with real care, and the camp cooks put out generous, wholesome food that keeps hunters going through hard days. On a hunt this physically demanding, eating well and sleeping warm are not luxuries, they are what make the next morning possible. The camp is reached by horseback and sits remote enough that the hunting starts from the tent rather than after a drive.
