The introduced species of Greenland Muskox has been carefully protected from the time they landed on the coast in Alaska. Although residents have opportunities for registration and subsistence-style muskox hunts, non-residents are limited to one unit with two seasons on Nunivak Island. Southwest of Bethel, Alaska 150 miles, Nunivak is home to more muskox than local residents. Almost all successful hunters contract with local transporters for their housing and transportation to the remote portions of the island.

Two bull muskox hunts exist on Nunivak, with a fall hunt and a mid-winter hunt. Although a guide is not required for this species, self-guided hunters should expect to pay $8,000-$11,000 in airplane charter fees, transporter costs, tag cost, permits, and other associated costs. Huntin’ Fool recommends that hunters apply in a party of two so that one does not have to make the trip alone to split the costs and it would allow both hunters to have a permit in hand. Outside of muskox hunting, there is little reason to visit Nunivak Island, but it is for sure a place that will be special to those who have made the journey and experienced it firsthand.
