Raise your hand if you missed a deadline. I’m raising my own hand. I can’t believe it! You would think with how much talk we have around the office that I wouldn’t miss the Utah antlerless application. Even worse, I had already started my application and just didn’t finish it. I’d like to say I forgot or blame it on the two days of planning meetings, but the application period was open for weeks. To add insult to injury, I am now no longer a max point holder for ewe sheep and went from having a shot at all resident permits to only having a shot at half the permits in the draw.
My point is, I know I’m not the only one. It seems we hear this each and every year. Members call after the deadline, not knowing there is nothing more they can do in most situations. Besides managing our personal calendars better, Huntin’ Fool has developed some awesome tools that can help us manage our data as well as provide an extra reminder for those ever so important application periods. Aside from checking the Huntin’ Fool website, one of the easiest and most direct ways to get alerts is through the Huntin’ Fool app. You’ll receive alerts/push notifications about draw deadlines, new podcasts, draw results, landowner tags, etc. All of the alerts can be specifically tailored in your account, so you only sign up for what you want.
Hunt Planner is a great place to save your login credentials. I find this feature extremely useful because, as you can tell, I am a bit of a procrastinator. I like having all of my logins and customer IDs at my fingertips because good luck getting through the state’s phone grid on a deadline day to fix anything. This is also a great place to store important documents like a copy of your hunter education as there are also states, such as Nevada and California, that require proof of hunter ed before applying. If you are very scatterbrained, you can also upload your receipts and store them so you can remind yourself that you did in fact already apply. I’m not saying we are the only ones doing this; there are some great organizations within the industry. However, you need to be careful who you trust. Not to name names, but there are some “competing” companies out there still pushing old and inaccurate data with deadline alerts based on years passed, dates that results are available, etc. All in all, there are some great options if you are trying to win the cluster that is application season, whether you still want to give it a shot on your own or you have completely given up on keeping track and would like to use an application service.
