If you’re like me, you’ve probably found yourself stuck in a rut, primarily hunting in your home state year after year. Many people assume that hunting out of state is prohibitively expensive, but in reality, we often spend more time and money on our home state hunts than we realize.

When I hunt locally, I find myself investing a significant amount of time in activities such as scouting, setting up cameras, and making frequent trips to the hunting area. If you evaluate the costs at the end of the year, you might be surprised at how much you spend on fuel, snacks, cameras, and other necessities. Additionally, all those half-day outings quickly add up to a substantial amount of time.

I understand that not everyone has the time or resources to hunt in a new state each year. I used to think that hunting in my home state of Montana was good enough to satisfy my annual hunting itch. However, once I started venturing to neighboring states and eventually to Alaska, I realized I was missing out on incredible adventures and opportunities that were available at a relatively affordable price.

It’s become a goal of mine to try at least one new hunt each year. Some of these hunts turn out to be one-time experiences, while others leave me eager to repeat the adventure. If you feel like you’re stuck in the routine of hunting only in your home state, I challenge you to start making plans and setting aside a few dollars from each paycheck to fund a new adventure in a different state. While travel and lodging are obvious expenses, don’t forget to account for additional costs like non-resident hunting licenses, gear, and food. By saving incrementally throughout the year, you can build a fund specifically for your hunting adventure without straining your finances. I can almost guarantee you won’t be disappointed and it will be well worth the investment.

Venturing into a new hunting state offers more than just the opportunity to pursue different animals. It exposes you to diverse landscapes, wildlife behaviors, and hunting techniques that enrich your overall hunting knowledge and experience. Moreover, it can give you a deeper appreciation for conservation efforts and the importance of preserving natural habitats across state lines.

Another benefit of hunting out of state is the opportunity to experience different types of game. Depending on where you go, you might have the chance to hunt species that are not available in your home state. This can add excitement and variety to your hunting experiences.
