I didn’t just learn to hunt as a young man. I was born for it. Naturally, fulfillment of that legacy is predicated on time in the field taking part in once-in-a-lifetime hunting opportunities. One such opportunity took place last fall with our good friends Spencer Bratt and JJ Lund at Old Mexico Hunting Co. I had the privilege of pursuing free-range, world-class mule deer in Sonora, Mexico. The terrain was rugged, but it was coupled with jaw-dropping scenery everywhere we hunted. Although I’ve managed to tag out on a number of trophy mule deer over the last 40 years, this was the first time in my life that I’d been in a position to put sights on multiple 200" deer. The ranch that we were hunting was meticulously managed specifically to provide that type of experience for its clients. Passing on 190s early tested everyone in camp, but we were consistently told that it would be worth the wait. They weren’t wrong.
Ironically, I was outfitted with one of
Pure Precision’s custom-built long-range precision rifles and ended up closing the deal at only 64 yards. However, when you perfectly execute a shot on target, you can appreciate the “precision” aspect of your equipment, regardless of range. Of the seven hunters who shared a camp that week, all tagged out on a 200"+ deer, with an average score over 220". After shooting my first deer (a 206" 4x4), I was asked to harvest a management deer. To my surprise, even that deer was in the 190s, classified as a management deer because of his 3x4 frame. As I was putting hands for the first time on a trophy of that caliber, I couldn’t help but reminisce on how far we had come.
My journey started as far back as I can remember, and it’s been a key part of my life every step of the way. Hunting the West was always in my blood, having developed a keen understanding of the importance of our collective heritage at a very early age as well as an appreciation for the animals we are fortunate enough to manage and pursue. Turning that passion and an inherent drive to continuously improve into a career in the industry proved to be a heavier lift than I could have ever imagined.
Fast forward from my childhood to when I served in the Marine Corps in the early 2000s. It was then and there that what was innately part of who I am became refined and fully realized. A proud and practiced serviceman, I was able to put my evolving hunting skills to use, protecting our nation and freedoms against the threat of terrorists and terrorism. I quickly learned that, in the heat of combat, the person to the left and the right of me is what truly mattered most – something I firmly believe to this day. Naturally, my time in service gave me a whole new appreciation for the power and precision of a world-class firearm. By 2005, I had my first rifle built, and I never looked back.
Following my service in the Marine Corps, I turned my focus to the art and science of both long-range shooting and gun building alike. After a decade of on-the-job training and honing my craft, I was hired by a small local company to revamp and grow its rifle manufacturing and distribution line. After coming to the conclusion that the owner and I had a different vision for the growth of the company, we parted ways in 2017. At that time, I was also managing the responsibilities that come with a three-year old child, a newborn baby, and a mortgage. I was fortunate enough to team up with Chad Drayer, also a Marine Corps veteran, to launch Mesa Precision Arms –investing my life savings into a dream to build a company that would challenge the status quo and enhance the standards for long-range precision rifles.
We innovated. We hustled. We out-thought and out-worked the competition. Even as a startup, we understood the bottlenecks and road hazards of the rifle manufacturing industry. We had developed so much product ourselves for other companies, we knew where they were failing and what needed to be done to overcome the most common challenges and pitfalls. We engineered new production methods that pushed the limits on what was generally deemed acceptable for tolerancing. We went on to design, manufacture, and distribute three flagship products – the Altitude stock, along with Crux and Summit Actions.
We discovered very early on that the established manufacturers in the industry were keen on protecting market share at all costs. The only way to get a seat at their table was to win the hearts and minds of the consumer. It was a grind spurred on by rejection and negativity, but over time we managed to gain traction based solely on the performance of the product. In 2022, after allegations of a trademark violation, we rebranded Mesa Precision Arms to our new and current name, Pure Precision. Around that same time, we conceived of and launched The Battalion – a community for long-range hunting and shooting enthusiasts, a distribution network for Pure Precision, and an e-commerce store for long-range precision rifles, actions, components, and accessories.
Our most recent innovations include the design and manufacturing of the category-defining SKLTN action and the first-ever dedicated long-range muzzleloader action. As a result of the success with those products, we implemented the ability to distribute products overseas to multiple countries. We are proud to have revolutionized muzzleloader sights and engineered one of the most accurate affordable muzzleloaders on the market. Today, we are going vertical with carbon fiber stocks, rifle barrels, carbon wrapped barrels, bottom metal, train to hunt and long-range shooting schools, and will be offering access to hunting adventures across the world.
We are humbled by the faith that our customers place in us on a daily basis. We believe that the future is bright for both
Pure Precision and
The Battalion. What’s been in our blood since birth will continue to drive us and our team forward – a love for the hunt and a passion for precision.
