Story by Dennis Knuteson
State: Utah
Species: Sheep - Desert

I drew one of the most coveted tags in the state of Utah for 2021. It took us on an adventure-of-a-lifetime with some of the best friends a guy could ask for. Throughout our summer scouting trips, we found two Desert sheep dead heads and went through the process with the Utah DWR to retrieve both of them for my buddies who glassed them up. Mitch Simmons and Dallin Heaps now each have a Desert sheep skull for their trophy rooms to remember the summer we had looking for a ram worthy of the tag.

We hunted hard for a week once the hunt started, but we weren’t able to find the ram I saw the day before opening. After a week of hunting, my friends had to head back home and I planned to hunt solo for another week and then return home and make plans to hunt again later. I moved camp to a different location so I could check in with my family and friends every day so they weren’t worried about me. I chose this area because we found a band of sheep a couple weeks before the hunt opened. There was a small ram that was starting to show rut activity. With the temperatures soaring above 100, I was glassing the steep ledges and shaded cliffs for sheep. Out of nowhere, this ram appeared with a band of sheep in the sage flats. I believe they were down getting water from the river and I happened to be in the right place at the right time. I ended up taking a ram of my dreams on a dream tag just the way I wanted.

This was an incredible experience, and I am so grateful for the friends and family who helped me along the way.
