ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA Endorsed Transporter provides a rare opportunity to experience a truly remote, do-it-yourself reindeer hunt in one of North America’s most isolated and culturally significant environments. Working in partnership with local Native communities, this operation offers hunters exclusive access to a vast free-ranging reindeer population across expansive tundra landscapes and rugged coastal terrain. With deep knowledge of the land and animal movement patterns, the transporter ensures hunters are safely positioned for success while maintaining a respectful and ethical connection to the land and its traditions. This is a Native-assisted hunt where support is provided for logistics, safety, and direction—while the hunt itself remains a true DIY experience. With minimal pressure across a massive public land area and a growing herd that requires active management, this hunt represents one of the most unique and rewarding reindeer opportunities available.

HUNT DETAILS:
These do-it-yourself hunts are conducted in a spot-and-stalk format across roughly 1,600 square miles of open terrain ranging from sea level to approximately 650 feet in elevation. Hunters should expect long glassing sessions, steady hiking, and changing weather conditions, but the reward is the chance at mature bulls exceeding 400” for those who are patient and selective. With an estimated herd size of 4,000–6,000 animals and annual harvest goals exceeding 1,000 animals, encounter rates are extremely high—hunters may see anywhere from 10 to hundreds of animals in a single day.

The hunt operates on an 9-day itinerary with 6 full hunting days. Travel occurs on the front and back ends, with nearly continuous daylight offering maximum flexibility to hunt when weather conditions allow. Shooting distances typically range from 100–400 yards for rifle hunters, while archers must be prepared for challenging wind conditions and open terrain. Rifles chambered in .270 or larger with premium bullets are recommended, ideally with synthetic stocks and stainless barrels suited for harsh coastal weather.

Hunters are transported to one of two primary camps, with a maximum of six hunters hosted per week. Transport to camp will provided and a local assistant accompanies each group for safety, direction, and logistical support but does not participate in the hunt itself. Radios are provided for communication, though hunters are encouraged to bring their own. Early harvests may allow for additional opportunity depending on weather and logistics.

In the event that weather impedes the hunt in any way, the transporter has other options as backup camps to hunt while mother nature plays out. This allows you to make the best use of your time without being hindered more than necessary.

*NOTE: The option to harvest a second Reindeer bull is available on a trophy fee basis. See pricing section for more details.

Tipping the Native assistant is required and represents their primary compensation. Recommended gratuities are $500 per person for groups of two, or $300 per person for groups of three to four. All bookings are non-refundable.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
This is a true do-it-yourself adventure. Hunters are responsible for bringing all personal gear, food, and equipment necessary for the duration of the hunt. Transportation to and from camp, logistical support, and one Native assistant who will remain in camp for safety and guidance purposes.

Additional support includes transportation of hides and antlers between camp and the village, salt for capes, basic trophy preparation materials (garden hose, duct tape, and plastic wrap), and freezer access for temporary storage. Hunters may retain their meat or donate it locally. Camps are primitive by design, emphasizing the rugged and authentic nature of the experience.

In the event weather delays prevent travel, designated spike-out locations may be used in town before or after the hunt. Hunters should plan to bring a waterproof duffel for transporting capes and antlers. At the conclusion of the hunt, trophies are transported via charter flight to Anchorage, where a taxidermy representative can assist with final handling, expediting, or shipment. All downstream processing and shipping costs are the hunter’s responsibility.

LICENSE INFORMATION:
Hunting licenses must be purchased online through the Alaska Department of Fish & Game website at least one month prior to the hunt. Hunters must coordinate with HFA or the transporter before purchasing to ensure correct licensing.

There are no minimum size requirements, and all hunting takes place on public land. Season timing generally falls within moderate weather windows, with temperatures ranging from approximately 32°F to 65°F. Success rates are exceptionally high due to herd density and management needs.

Hunters should plan travel through Bethel before continuing onward to the island via regional air service. A sample itinerary includes arrival in Bethel one day prior to island transfer, six days of hunting, and return travel at the conclusion of the trip.
