ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter operates in northeastern New Mexico, working private land only in units 42 and 46. The operation holds exclusive hunting rights on working cattle ranches that are managed with long-term quality in mind rather than short-term harvest, which is why the animals on them reach the age they do. Elk are the species pursued. Guaranteed landowner tags are part of what this outfitter offers, so hunters are not dependent on a draw to get on the ground. Everything is run on private land, which keeps outside pressure off entirely and gives the guides full control over how each ranch is hunted from one year to the next.
HUNT DETAILS:
This is about as physically manageable as an elk hunt gets. Total elevation gain seldom exceeds two hundred feet across any of these ranches, and the terrain is mild throughout, which makes it a realistic option for hunters who cannot handle a mountain hunt or simply do not want one. The farm ground and alfalfa fields on these ranches pull elk in off the surrounding hills and neighboring properties, concentrating animals where hunters can work them. Days begin before light with a short hike to a vantage point overlooking those feeding areas, and the hunting is done from there. Bulls in the two hundred eighty to three hundred class and better are the standard here, with a realistic chance at something in the three hundred twenty to three fifty range. Three to four bulls in that upper class come off these ranches every year. Opportunity has run at a consistent ninety-five percent. Hunts run five days.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Lodging is at a modest local motel rather than a lodge or ranch house, which keeps hunters close to town and to services. Meals are included and are taken at nearby restaurants, grocery stores, or fast food spots depending on what is open and what the group prefers, so there is flexibility in when and what hunters eat. The package covers the landowner tag, guiding, meals, and lodging together. Hunters are expected to arrive the day before the hunt begins and leave the day after it ends. Once an animal is down, the outfitter handles field dressing and delivers it to a local meat locker for processing.
