This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter is a second-generation guide operating on the family ranch in South Dakota, carrying on a conservation legacy the family started decades ago. Wild ringneck pheasant is the quarry, and the family has been hunting them here for more than fifty years. These are wild birds rather than a put-and-take operation, which is an increasingly rare thing. The guides are passionate, attentive, and knowledgeable about the ground they work, and the dogs are bred and trained specifically for the job and clearly enjoy it. What sets the operation apart is attention to detail and a commitment to a personal experience rather than running large groups through. For wingshooters, that combination is hard to find anywhere.

HUNT DETAILS:
A hunting day here follows a set rhythm. It starts with a hearty breakfast and coffee, followed by a safety briefing from the guide before anyone loads a gun. From there the morning hunt gets underway, worked behind trained dogs that know the ground and the birds. Around midday the group heads back to the lodge for a homemade lunch and time to rest, which is more welcome than it sounds after a morning of walking. The afternoon hunt follows, and hunters return to the lodge afterward. These are wild ringneck pheasants, not released birds, which means they run, hold tight in cover, and flush on their own terms. That is what makes South Dakota the standard for pheasant hunting and what separates this from a preserve. Evenings back at the lodge are part of the trip as well, with three sitting areas for the group to spread out and go back over the day.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
The lodge runs fifteen thousand square feet and includes three suites, each with a private bath, plus four additional sleeping rooms. Pillow-top mattresses, sixteen hundred thread count sheets, wifi, a laundry room, and a game room round it out. The food is a headline in its own right, made fresh daily and built on a farm, field, and stream-to-table approach. Lobster flown in from Maine, Copper River salmon, Alaskan halibut, and a South Dakota Kobe ribeye all appear alongside farm-fresh produce. The bar is well stocked with single malts, single barrel bourbons, rye, and much more, and nightly tastings are part of the routine.
