HUNT DETAILS:
New Mexico has provided sportsmen with quality elk hunting opportunities for decades, offering both a lottery draw system and a guaranteed landowner tag program, making it a strong option for avid, youth, and mobility-impaired hunters. Hunts run from September 1st through December 31st, covering pre-rut, rut, and post-rut seasons, and are conducted with bow, muzzleloader, and rifle. Public land hunts take place in units 13, 15, 16a, 16b, 16d, 16e, 17, 34, and 36 for draw applicants, while private ranch opportunities are also available, providing exclusive access, strong success rates, and quality accommodations for archery and muzzleloader hunts. Archery hunts are typically 6–7 days, and gun hunts are 5 days. If unsuccessful in the draw, hunters can purchase guaranteed landowner tags ranging from $2,500–$13,000 depending on the unit and tag, allowing them to bypass the application process if desired.
