ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter operates in northern Maine, on the waters of Eagle Lake and across nearly one hundred square miles of exclusive territory. Black bear are the species pursued. The operating philosophy is quality over quantity, and only a small number of hunters are taken each week, which keeps the country from being overworked and the attention on each client. Hunters using rifle, pistol, black powder, shotgun, crossbow, and archery equipment are all accommodated. The lodge side of the operation is set up for families as well as hunters, with enough going on that a spouse or children can come along rather than being left at home. Access has improved with jet service into nearby Presque Isle.
HUNT DETAILS:
Two styles of bear hunting are offered here. Baited hunts put every client over an active bait, with guides running trail cameras to know which bears are working which sites before a hunter ever sits. Hound hunts are the other option and run at a different pace entirely. Success rates back both up, with bait hunts running at eighty percent and hound hunts at close to one hundred. There is also an exclusive boat access option, where hunters travel by boat to their stand inside the Eagle Lake State Reserve, which delivers a level of solitude most bear hunts cannot. Bears here run from four and a half feet up to occasionally better than seven. Hunters carry private channel two-way radios for direct contact with their guide, so nobody sits in a stand longer than necessary. Guides carry higher-powered radios in their vehicles, so communication holds up across the territory. In-house meat processing and shipping are available.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Hunters stay in comfortable lakeside log cabins, each with a private bath, set on the water of fifty-five hundred acre Eagle Lake. That is a considerable step up from what most bear camps offer. Meals are served in a historic dining room and the food is a point of pride, running to Maine lobster, prime cuts, and a good deal more. The lodge is set up for more than hunters as well, with plenty to do for a spouse or children who come along, which makes this workable as a family trip rather than a solo one. The non-hunting hours are worth something here too.
