ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter has been guiding since 2006, building a reputation with hunters from across North America over that span. All of the hunting is in Wyoming, and the species list is long, covering elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, antelope, Shiras moose, mountain lion, black bear, Merriam turkey, and prairie dogs. That range means the guides work everything from open plains to mountain country, and they know both well. Beyond the field, the team helps hunters sort out big game draw questions and get ready before they ever arrive, which takes a good deal of guesswork out of planning a trip. The emphasis throughout is on a well-run hunt and a mature animal at the end of it.
HUNT DETAILS:
This is a hound hunt for mountain lion, run across a mix of private ranches, National Forest, and BLM ground. That spread gives the guides options and access to country holding strong lion numbers. The work begins with finding a track worth running. Fresh snow makes that far easier, and the guides cover ground looking for one using four-wheel-drive trucks, ATVs, and snow machines, sometimes leaving the machines behind to hike ridges and other places lions tend to travel. Once a suitable track turns up, the hounds are turned loose, and the hunt shifts to following the pack until the cat is treed. The outfitter owns and trains the dogs personally, which matters more than almost anything else on a hunt like this, since the quality of the pack determines what gets found and what gets held. Hunts are run one on one, so the hunter is alongside the guide for the whole chase rather than trailing a group.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Lion hunters stay at the outfitter's home rather than a lodge or a motel in town. The space is a loft with two bedrooms, a private bathroom, and a kitchen, which gives hunters their own area and the run of it for the length of the hunt. The setup is practical rather than fancy, and it does not pretend otherwise. What it offers is a warm place to sleep, a shower, and somewhere to dry gear and store food, all under the same roof as the guide. Hunters staying here should plan on handling their own meals in the kitchen.
