For 2023, hunting seasons inside the Trophy Game Management Area will run September 15-December 31 for all areas except 12 and 13. Unit 12 will run October 15-December 31, and unit 13 will run September 15, 2023-March 31, 2024. Wolves will continue to be treated as predators in the Predatory Animal Management Area where there is no season and no license needed to harvest. At the time of print, the 2023 wolf regulations were not available. Check back to https://wgfd.wyo.gov/regulations for more information on wolf hunting in Wyoming.

There are 14 wolf units inside the management area with set quotas for each one. The total harvest quota for 2023 will be 40. The 2022 quota was 47, the 2021 quota was 47, and the 2020 quota was 51. Once the individual unit quotas are met, the season will close in that specific unit. Wyoming Game and Fish’s most recent count shows a minimum of 314 wolves in 40 packs living in Wyoming. Wolves may not be hunted in Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park, or the Wind River Reservation.

Hunter Requirements

Hunters are required to wear one visible article of fluorescent orange.

Youth Requirements

The minimum age to take any big or trophy game animal is 11 years old if that person will be 12 years old by the end of the same calendar year.

Weapon Restrictions

Firearm silencers may be used during any big game season. The use of electronic calls is allowed. Wolves may not be baited in Wyoming. No hunters shall use artificial light to aid in the harvest of big game.

Other Tag Opportunities

Tags may be purchased over-the-counter and are good for any open unit. Wolves may be hunted year-round without a license in the Predatory Animal Management Area.

Harvest Reporting

All wolf harvests must be reported within 24 hours at 800-264-1280. Hunters must keep the pelt and skull of the wolf and present it within three days to the Game and Fish Department. Wolves harvested in a designated wilderness area must be presented within three days of returning from the wilderness or within 10 days of the date harvested, whichever occurs first. Evidence of sex must remain naturally attached to the pelt.

Bag Limit

Hunters may purchase two tags in the Trophy Game Management Area. Wolves in the Predatory Animal Management Area may be hunted without a tag, and there is no limit to the number of wolves you may harvest.

Comments

Wyoming offers another opportunity for hunters to pursue wolves. Wolf hunters in Wyoming saw average success in 2022 with a total of 55 wolves taken statewide. Thirty-one of these wolves were harvested within the Trophy Game Management Areas and another 24 were taken in the Predatory Animal Management Area. USDA’s Wildlife Services took out another six wolves from the population.

Wyoming’s wolf tags are expensive, but if you are planning on hunting Northwest Wyoming, it may be worth buying one if the quota is still open in the areas you plan on hunting. Unfortunately for non-resident hunters, there is a lot of wilderness in the northwest portion of the state. A non-resident cannot legally hunt in the wilderness unless they have an outfitter or are accompanied by a Wyoming resident.

We recommend non-resident hunters not buy their wolf tag until they arrive in Wyoming for their hunt. This way, you can make sure mortality quotas have not been reached in the units you are planning on hunting. If you have any questions regarding wolf hunting or if you are looking for an Endorsed Outfitter, give us a call.
