July Transition: Turning Draw Results into Fall Hunting Opportunities

It's July, the great transition. Application season is behind us, and draw results are flooding our inboxes. Most of us will receive an “unsuccessful” notice, but success in the draw isn't the be-all and end-all to success this fall. There are still some over-the-counter options out there if you are willing to put in the time and work to have a fun hunt. Whether you are a self-guided hunter or looking to go guided in an area with over-the-counter or landowner tags, our team of Hunt Advisors is here to help you maximize your opportunities, so don't hesitate to reach out.

As you can see, the hunting industry is constantly evolving—from draw odds to the number of permits—though the biggest changes year in and year out seem to be with fees. Sure, there are states like California that have a percent increase built into their system to raise hunting license and permit fees; we get that. But some of these states are getting completely out of hand. Utah shook the industry in 2025 by shooting non-resident prices up, and this year, Wyoming, in all its glory, said, “Hold my beer.” As you can see on page XX, effective January 2027, non-resident preference point fees will be $75 for elk, deer, and antelope. That’s just points. I know it doesn't seem crazy, but when you add it up—woof. $225 can get you very far in some random state drawings or raffles.
