When it comes to knives there are so many options available. I have tried almost every knife on the market, and I personally switched to just using replaceable blade knives. My reason is I love razor sharp blades and between hunting with my family and guiding I usually put my knife to 10-20 animals each year. That would be a ton of sharping and for me the only choice for me is a replaceable blade knife.
One thing I can tell you is not all replaceable blade knives are equal. I cannot tell you how many plastic handled knifes I have broken in the past. When Hogue released the Expel Folding Scalpel last year, I purchased one from their website. I was honestly impressed with quality of the G10 composite laminate material in the handle of the knife. I really liked the grip as it did not slip in my hand as other similar plastic knives had in the past when covered in blood. I used this knife for the entire 2024 hunting season.
One thing that sets this knife apart is the flipper tab that functions as a blade ejector. This is a great safety feature as you no longer must pry the back of a blade up and try to pull the blade off this knife. This is a game changer as a lot of hunters have gone away from replaceable knives due to the danger of being cut. To add in even more safety features Hogue made the Expel Blade Dispenser which holds five new blades and has an area to dispose of your old blades.
I truly put the Expel Folding Scalpel to the test last September. I was guiding in Alaska and while flying to camp we found a dead Walrus on the beach. I was dropped off and eight blades later I had removed the head and skinned it out. All of that was done without breaking a blade. Bottom line is if you are a replaceable blade knife user you should really look at picking one up as it is an awesome knife.
