South Dakota Deer Hunting 2023

Available South Dakota Deer Hunts --- Search HF Aventures

In South Dakota, deer hunting seasons have helped deer populations recover from historic lows with approximately 34,000 buck deer being harvested in 2021. Hunting is the primary tool for managing deer populations and ensuring the wellbeing of the species and its habitat. Whitetail and mule deer are the most highly sought-after big game species in the state, with higher densities of mule deer found in the western units. The Black Hills deer unit has both whitetail and mule deer, with three-quarters of the unit being accessible public land. West River rifle deer hunting includes any deer and whitetail-only hunt codes, and most units consist of short grass fields, rolling prairie, wooded drainages, and agricultural fields. National Wildlife Refuges offer muzzleloader-only hunts with licenses available to non-residents through the draw, and Sand Lake is the largest and provides the best hunting.

Trophy deer are typically harvested by guided hunters on private lands or by residents, but public lands and walk-in access areas provide a fun hunt with a reasonable chance of taking a nice buck. Keep in mind that type 01 licenses are valid for any deer (either species) and type 11 licenses are for whitetail buck deer only.
