What to Expect
The Paunsaugunt Unit in southern Utah stretching from Highway 12 to the Arizona border is one of the state’s premier mule deer destinations, known for producing bucks in the 190–200”+ class in good moisture years. This premium limited-entry unit features diverse terrain, from high elevation pine, aspen, and manzanita forests in the north to oak, pinyon-juniper, and sage steppe further south. The unit offers excellent access and is home to a migratory herd, though fewer deer now reach the plateau rim near Kanab Creek, with most staying in lower elevations due to improved habitat.
Hunters can choose from archery, muzzleloader, and rifle seasons. The archery season is particularly effective for targeting bucks in their summer patterns, while later hunts—especially in warm weather—require more effort and glassing due to spread-out deer and slowed migration. With strong genetics, varied terrain, and a well-managed herd, Paunsaugunt offers an incredible chance at trophy-class mule deer in breathtaking country.
