Huntin' Fool Showcase

December 2018
Story by Richard Novotny
State: Alaska
Species: Sheep - Dall

After a quick breakfast, we put together a light pack and worked our way to the rams. They were in the location where we had spotted them the day before, so we hunkered down to start glassing and figure out a game plan. We knew that we needed some help from the intermittent fog to get us closer. As it would move in and out, we would work our way down the ridgeline. After getting in range at around 300 yards, we had to wait for the fog to clear off. The sun came out, and we spotted the rams about 1,500 feet below us and another mile up the drainage. We closed the distance to a range of 408 yards. After taking some time to calm down as much as I could, I squeezed the trigger. Then, the excitement started as the ram was down. He was 38 7/8", which length wise was the fourth best ram since the hunt went to a draw in 2010.
