Huntin' Fool Showcase

December 2018
Story by Pete Jameson
State: Alaska
Species: Bear - Brown

At around 2:30, a bear was spotted on our big grass flat. The stalk was on as we loaded onto the skiff and took off. The tide was in, so we were able to cut the distance some as we started our walk in shallow water and mud. We got within about 300 yards of our bear and determined that he was a good mature boar that would square about 8 1/2' and had a great non-rubbed hide. For the first 50 yards from that point, we were totally out of sight of the bear. When we emerged from the low swale, our bear was gone. Bert noticed that the tide was going out, and he sent Clay back to move the skiff out to deeper water. Bert and I then went where we had last seen the bear and started working our way to a hidden flat.

By 4:00, I was set up with a good rest, looking at a tree that was 207 yards across the flat. After 15 or 20 minutes, our bear showed up to the left of the tree and was grazing in the direction of the tree. When he was even with the tree, the safety was off and I was ready to shoot. He turned his butt to me, took a couple steps, and then turned broadside. I sent the 270 grain Hornady bullet on its way. The bear jumped and turned back in the direction from which he had come, ran 40 yards, and collapsed in a heap. Bert and Clay from Baranof Expeditions were on me in less than a minute, helping me up and congratulating me on a great shot.
