2018 Story Contest Sponsored by Huntin' Fool and Christensen Arms
The 2017 hunting season has all but come to a close, and we hope you were successful. If you were lucky enough to harvest a big game animal this season, don’t miss out on the chance to see your harvest photos and stories printed in our magazine and to win some incredible prizes. Not only does each submission we receive have the opportunity to be published within the pages of our magazine, but the submitter may also win some great prizes. With that being said, I am pleased to announce the details of our 2018 Story Contest. We are excited to offer some brand new prizes strictly for our story contest. Send us your successful harvest stories and photos to be eligible to win some great prizes in the following categories.
2018 COVER STORIES
The Title Sponsor for 2018 is Christensen Arms. Thanks to them, the 12 hunters whose photos grace the covers of our magazine this year will receive an ELR bolt action rifle. It was created specifically as a dedicated long-range hunting rifle. Paired with its lightweight, adjustable carbon fiber composite stock and integrated 20-MOA rail, this rifle is prepared to consistently deliver the payload at extended ranges. The ELR comes standard with an enlarged bolt knob, enhanced grip angle, and five flush cup attachment points. Each Cover Story winner has their choice of caliber for this rifle. The retail value of the Cover Story prize is over $2,700. We are excited to partner with Christensen Arms to bring each of our Cover Story winners this amazing prize.
Our cover stories are chosen based on a variety of criteria, which includes the size of the animal, quality of the photos submitted, variety of the photos submitted (harvest and supporting), and if the angle and pose of the photo fits our cover design. If you’re interested in submitting your story and photos to be considered for one of our covers, make sure you send us harvest photos that showcase different angles. The more options our graphic designer has to work with, the better chance you have of making the cover.
TROPHY ROOM PHOTO CONTEST
Last year, we introduced a new photo contest sponsored by Vortex Optics. We are pleased to announce that the Trophy Room Photo Contest will continue for 2018. To enter, submit your 2017 harvest photos by emailing them to submit@huntinfool.com or uploading them on our website. Winners will be chosen by a panel of Huntin’ Fool staff based on photo resolution, quality, and composition. The winner of this contest will receive a pair of Vortex Vulture HD 15x56 binos valued at $599.
READERS’ CHOICE STORY CONTEST
Each month, printed stories and web stories are eligible for our Readers’ Choice Story Contest. Voting for this contest is open to Huntin’ Fool members and non-members. Everyone who visits our website will have access to read and vote for their favorite story. This year, we are giving away a new prize for this contest. The winner of our Readers’ Choice Story Contest will receive a high-end Leupold spotting scope valued at over $1,500.
PRINTED STORIES
Our story packages have always included Huntin’ Fool branded gear, but this year, we are including a brand new, exclusive jacket just for printed stories. This soft shell jacket is water and wind resistant, includes a micro fleece lining, and comes in a Battleship Grey color. The story packages are valued at $160 and come with the exclusive jacket, a Huntin’ Fool hat, an Outdoor Edge knife, and four free copies of the issue in which the story is featured. This story package makes writing and submitting your story well worth your time.
SUBMITTED STORIES WITH INTENT TO USE
When a story is submitted, we ask that an Intent to Use agreement be signed to give us first rights to print the submitted story and photos. With this agreement, the submitter is free to post their submission to social media and on conservation sites, magazines, and newsletters. In regard to submitting to other magazines, the submitter is free to do so as long as Huntin’ Fool has published the story and photos first. In return for signing the Intent to Use agreement, the submitter will receive a piece of Huntin’ Fool apparel for FREE.
WRITING AND SUBMITTING A STORY
To enter the 2018 Story Contest and be eligible to win any and all of the great prizes offered this year, simply write a story about your successful hunt from this past season and submit it to us along with your harvest and supporting photos. Make sure your story is 500-1,200 words long and the photos you submit are high resolution and visually support the story you are telling. The more diverse and high-quality photos you send us, the better chance you have of being published in our magazine.
If you need help writing a story about your successful harvest, check out my article in our May 2016 issue which includes tips on creating an outline for your story, the guidelines for stories submitted to us, and what we’re looking for in regard to photo submissions. There are four ways to submit your story and photos: upload them on our website at www.huntinfool.com/storycontest/entryform.php, email them to submit@huntinfool.com, send them to us on a flash drive via the postal mail, or email a Dropbox or WeTransfer link to submit@huntinfool.com.
We begin working on each magazine two to three months before it is printed, so the earlier you submit your story and photos, the better chance you have of getting printed. The same guidelines apply for the selection of the printed stories as the selection of our cover stories. We cannot stress enough how important it is that you send in high-quality harvest and supporting photos along with your story. This gives you the best chance at seeing your story printed in our magazine.
Huntin’ Fool focuses on growing a community of hunters who help each other and share in their successes.
