I’ve always been old school when it comes to turkey hunting. For years, I relied on nothing more than the bead at the end of my barrel. When you get a bird talking in the timber and you know he’s coming but suddenly he goes quiet, all you can do is try to coax another gobble out of him to give away his location. In the meantime, you’re scanning with your eyes and listening carefully, making sure he doesn’t catch even the slightest movement. Then it happens. He pops up ninety degrees to your right or left, and you have to make a quick swing and shoot. In the rush, it’s hard to remember to get your cheek back down on the stock while twisting into an uncomfortable position. That usually leads to a less-than-ideal shot and, sometimes, a clean miss.
Everything changed the day I picked up my wife’s 20 gauge after she had tagged her bird and another tom was still talking. We switched positions, and I got to shoot a red dot for the first time. I had to swing completely around to get a shot at an alert bird trying to slip away, but the Burris FastFire 3 made it easy. I swung, put the dot on the base of his neck, and squeezed. Simple as that. The sleek, compact housing and wide viewing window make it feel like a floating red dot on top of your gun. No obstructions. Just a clear sight picture.
