DESCRIPTION:

This outfitter was established in 2016 by the owner and operator today. The outfitter lives in the Northern Territory Australia, which is where he calls home. The decision to open a first class hunting operation was an easy one to make due to the numbers of game, the vast numbers of quality trophy Asiatic Water Buffalo seen on any given days safari, as well as the other game including large wild oxen and wild boars to name a few. Furthermore the close proximity of Katherine to many of Australia’s world famous natural landmarks and the outfitter’s permanent lodge type accommodation, providing a comfortable central base, added merit to the idea of starting his business. Through the passion for hunting and fishing, this outfitter aims to provide a top class hunting experience as well as showcasing the Northern Territory’s unique and magical landscapes creating a safari and memories you will never forget. Today they have exclusive leases on the well renowned Bonanza Valley, Arnhem Land Concession and also conducts regular safaris on Conways Stations out of the first class purpose built hunting lodge.

This outfitter conducts dangerous game safaris for Water Buffalo in Central Arnhem Land, Northern Territory Australia. While on a safari wild oxen/scrub bulls, wild boar, donkey and cow buffalo can also be hunted. Big Country Safari has exclusive leases on 3 adjacent concessions totaling over 1.2 million acres of free range pure wilderness. We also conduct buffalo hunting safaris on another 800,000 acres of private ranch land. They also offer Banteng and Camel Hunting Safaris on separate concessions located on the Coburg Peninsula also in Arnhem Land for Banteng and private desert concessions for camel. This outfitter hunts in one of the last truly wild frontiers left in the world, Arnhemland Northern Territory, Australia. There are plentiful game numbers and not a fence or other person to be seen, this is truly a wild experience! This outfitter cater's to all hunters and outdoorsman. Equipped with modern 4x4/go-anywhere vehicles, whatever your age or fitness level is, they can tailor a safari to meet your criteria. They love a traditional walk, spot and stalk safari, so if trekking long distances through remote untouched valleys in search of old bulls is up your alley, this outfitter will have you covered very well!

These hunts take place in the Northwest Territories. Arnhem Land, located in the Northern Territory of Australia, is home to one of the largest populations of wild water buffalo in Australia. Arnhem Land tented camp is equipped with hot showers, toilets, tents, elevated beds, fans, electricity, hot meals, satellite tv and wifi. These large and powerful animals thrive in the region's wetlands, floodplains, and savannah's, providing ample hunting opportunities for adventurous hunters. You will see small and larger herds of Water Buffalo, lone old Bulls and small groups of Buffalo bulls, some Wild Ox (Scrub Bull), and the occasional Wild Boar. With luck you may also see Dingo, Kangaroos, Wallabies, Emus, Fresh Water Crocodiles. Unlike some other hunting destinations that may be more accessible or developed, this particular area offers hunters the chance to experience true wilderness and adventure in a remote and untamed environment. It is not easy hunting, and the country is vast and rugged, and they have to find the Buffalo. They don't have a network of tracks, no dams, troughs, etc.... this area is wilderness! You will explore and navigate by way of 4x4 vehicles, then hunt on foot with your classic double or bolt rifle at hand. Like most wild animals, Australian Asiatic Water Buffalo can appear calm or even run off, yet if wounded or cornered, they can be just as mean and nasty as Cape Buffalo. Yes a charge is very rare, it is often unexpected, and adrenaline can make a wounded bull seam unstoppable. Hunters will always be backed up by a large caliber rifle in hand, using premium ammunition, and someone skilled at stopping a close up charge in an instant! These buffalo are known for their impressive size, robust build, and formidable horns. Trophy-quality bulls with large and heavy horns can be found in the area, offering hunters the chance to harvest a prized trophy. It's a challenging pursuit that requires skill, patience, and determination. The rugged and remote terrain, dense vegetation, and unpredictable weather conditions add to the challenge of the hunt, making it a rewarding and unforgettable experience for hunters. This area is also renowned for its rich Aboriginal culture and heritage. This experience from start to finish is an opportunity to learn about Indigenous traditions, customs, and ways of life. Immersing oneself in this local culture adds depth and meaning to the hunting experience.

The Asiatic water buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis) was introduced in the 1840’s to Northern Australia as a means of meat supply for the early settlers in their colonies. It's estimated today that some 150,000 head still roam the north of the top end today. The mature bull's range in size from 600-800 kilograms with bulls of 1000 kilograms not uncommon. During the dry season most trophy bulls will be found solitary in dry open plains with surrounding vegetation, rocky hills, gullies and sandy creek lines providing ideal cover. With the size, aggressiveness and the inch thick hide of the buffalo a min calibre of .338 is recommended, but the 375 H&H, 416 or 458 is ideally suited. Hunting will be done at close quarters with most close in stalks ranging from 15 to 50 meters and longer shots taken at 60-100 meters when stalking on open plains. Buffalo will be spotted and then stalked in many cases but most commonly the most impressive bulls will come from walking particular springs, swamps creek line and open plains. The buffalo’s strong sense of smell makes it all too aware of its sensory environment and surroundings making it such a desirable game animal both in size and the effort required to take one of these trophy animals. This amazing sense of smell only seems to get better and better with a bulls size and maturity. The water buffalos impressive wide sweeping horns make for an impressive trophy either as a skull mount or a beautiful shoulder mount and are bound to be a conversation starter on any keen hunter’s wall.

ARCHERY / BOW HUNTERS: Since the conception of their business they have aimed to accommodate and welcome bowhunters. They love the challenge and use of patience required to place their clients within 20 yards of a 1600-pound bull, waiting for the animal to present the perfect shot opportunity. Archery hunting and the growth of the sport worldwide is seeing hunting buffalo with a bow becoming more and more popular amongst clients. Buffalo have an inherent sixth sense when it comes to getting close while hunting them. This outfitter's guides love the challenge and rush of guiding archery hunters. The earlier months of the season May, June, July provide greater long grass cover for those extra close proximity stalks. However the landscape of their buffalo concession dotted with hundreds of creeks and tree lines provides ample cover for all levels of archery/bow hunters and huntress both young and old all year round.

They recommend hunters be able to pull at minimum 65 pounds, but 70-80 pounds is ideal. They recommend an arrow weight of around 800 grains in total for best penetration success. However the most important factor is the broad head. They recommend the following two blade single bevel one piece broad-heads (Grizzly broadheads, Alaskan Silver Flames Broadheads, Ozcut Broadheads, Kayuga Broadheads). You must ensure your broad heads are razor sharp. Buffalo bulls have a hide over an inch thick in places! Typically most bow shots are taken at distances between 20 and 50 yards bowhunting buffalo.
