Hunters can pursue elk, deer, bighorn sheep, moose, antelope, mountain goat, black bear, and mountain lion. The operation is not limited to hunting either. HUNT DETAILS:
This outfitter works a prime piece of northwestern Wyoming, with access to vast lion country broken up by remote valleys, which is close to ideal for tracking cats. The lion population here is healthy, and years of experience running these drainages means the guides know where cats travel and where a track is worth committing to. The hunt runs on hounds. The dogs are well trained and ready to go, and once a track is cut the pace changes entirely. Horses do a lot of the work getting hunters into position, and the stock used here is sure-footed enough for the terrain it covers. That combination of dogs, horses, and guides who have done this for years is what makes the hunt work. Hunters should be ready to move when the hounds strike. It suits a first-time lion hunter and a hunter after another mature tom equally, and the chase itself is the part nobody forgets.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Lion hunters stay in a private cabin at the lodge and hunt from there each day, which works well on a hound hunt where the country being covered changes daily anyway. Good lion ground sits a short ride away, so hunters are not losing hours to travel. The cabin gives each hunter a real bed, a roof, and somewhere warm to thaw out at the end of a cold day, which on a cat hunt is worth more than it sounds. Meals and lodging are handled by the outfitter. For hunters who want to avoid a tent, the lodge-based setup is the comfortable way to chase lions.
