ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter is a family-run business that has been operating for more than forty years in North Carolina. The staff often comes down to a husband and wife working alongside one another, which keeps the family feel intact from the moment a hunter walks through the door. That atmosphere works for seasoned hunters and for anyone on a first hunt. The owners are North Carolina natives and have hunted and tracked everything in their country, including whitetail deer, black bear, wild hog, and eastern turkey. The lodge staff and guides work hard to make a stay comfortable, and many clients come back each year for a different hunt and the southern hospitality that comes with it.
HUNT DETAILS:
The bears here are big, and the area holds the highest concentration of black bears per square mile anywhere in the world. Average weight runs four hundred seventy-two pounds, some go over seven hundred, and the current record bear at eight hundred pounds came off this ground. Mild winters are the reason. These bears hibernate little if at all, which means they grow nearly year round. The country is huge tracts of farmland surrounded by corn and soybean fields, with National Wildlife Refuges in every direction feeding a steady supply of bears onto the outfitter's property. North Carolina allows natural bait only, so corn and peanuts are used, and the baits run year round so multiple bears are working them before a hunter ever arrives. With that many bears on the same baits, they stay active all day. Archery, muzzleloader, rifle, shotgun, and handgun hunters are all welcome. Only four weeks of bear hunting run each year, with six to ten hunters per week.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Lodging is at a local motel, and the outfitter reserves the room when a hunt is booked, so nothing needs to be arranged. Hunters are transported from the motel to their stand each day, which means no rental vehicle and no navigating unfamiliar back roads in the dark. For non-hunting guests or anyone wanting something to do outside the stand, the outfitter can arrange a long list of activities including canoeing, wildlife photography and viewing, hiking, camping, target shooting and skeet, fishing, and even coastal shrimping. That range makes this workable as a trip for a couple or a family rather than a solo hunter.

Bear Management E-Stamps can be purchased online through the North Carolina Wildlife website. You will need to coordinate with HFA or your outfitter prior to purchasing to ensure you purchase the required tag and licenses.
