HUNT DETAILS:
Axis deer originally came out of high-fence ranches in the Texas hill country and have long since established themselves as a free-range population. They live in rolling limestone hills, juniper-choked valleys, and live oak mottes, which is beautiful ground and harder to hunt than it looks. During the rut mature bucks are hard horned and vocal, screaming at all hours, which is what makes this hunt work. The method is spot and stalk, with a lot of glassing and calling to locate and pull in the better bucks. Guides run two hunters per guide, since axis typically group up and multiple good bucks often show at once. Typical shots run one hundred to three hundred yards, with longer opportunities coming up. Hunters need to be able to walk uneven, rocky ground, and snake gaiters or snake boots are strongly recommended. Expect serious heat and pack water accordingly. This is an off-season treat for free-range hunters, and few states offer anything like it.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Hunters stay in a local ranch house or a nearby Airbnb, whichever sits closest to the hunting location. The accommodations are simple rather than fancy, but they are comfortable and welcoming, and they give hunters a real place to relax at the end of a hot day. Meals are covered as well, usually prepared by the guide, and the food runs to the direct and satisfying end of things rather than anything elaborate. The point of the setup is to remove hassle. Nobody has to book a room, find a restaurant, or plan logistics on arrival, which leaves the entire trip focused on hunting.
