This is a small family business that has been outfitting hunts full time for nearly 30 years. They own and lease several properties managed for trophy hunting on thousands of acres of pristine free ranging and estate country. They hunt both the North and South Islands of New Zealand!
On the South Island they have large public and private concessions in the Southern Alps for Tahr and Chamois, which is only a 2 hour scenic flight away. From the moment you touch down in New Zealand they take care of everything so you have a seamless experience from start to finish. All you have to do is take in the amazing scenery and enjoy the ‘kiwi’ experience they will share with you. Most all of their hunting is on the North Island, unless you are hunting Tahr and Chamois. It is very common to hunt Stag and Deer on the North Island, and then jump over to the South Island to hunt Tahr and Chamois. This is very easy to do and should definitely be considered if these species on your agenda. When hunting Tahr and Chamois they have their exclusive area for these hunts located on the South Island. The South Island can be a lot colder than the North so hunters need to have adequate gear for the Southern Alps. There is plenty to do for the non-hunters or hunters waiting for a break in the weather. Lake Matheson is a photographers dream with crystal clear mirror image of the mountains behind. Walk old mining shafts lit with glow worms, soak at the mineral hot tubs, take a heli-flight up to the Fox or Frans glacier, or just sample some of the local beers at the local bar. At this location, from the dining room, guests have a spectacular view of the mountains and Mt Cook, which is the highest peak in New Zealand sitting at 12,218 ft.
This Chamois hunting opportunity is set up for all types of hunters!
For the mountain hunter that wants to hike and camp, they offer a great option! This outfitter offers a true spike camp mountain hunt that is done all on foot from the base of the mountain up into the alps, and all the way back. One of the most unique free range hunts in the world today is Tahr and Chamois in rugged South Westland. South Westland is over 1 million acres of public concession land with abundant game and very limited access due to terrain. Your hunt starts at sea level in the thick West Coast rain forest where you and your guide will load into a helicopter and be whisked onto the tops of the Southern Alps and in minutes be in country that is otherwise impossible to access. Their pilot knows the country like the back of his hand and will drop you in a place that has lots of game and has not been pressured by other hunters. Your guide will set up camp and you will be in hunting heaven, able to glass game right from the tent. Get ready to climb as this terrain is some of the most rugged in the world, but you will be right amongst an abundance of animals! Often they will relocate to a different spot for chamois as they tend to move at a lower altitude where they can come and go from the cover of the bush edge. They can also use the helicopter to access the mountains for day hunting on foot but returning to the lodge for the comforts of home in the evening!
For the hunters that don't want to battle the mountains, or that are physically limited, they also offer an aerial assisted trophy hunt for a adrenaline packed adventure! They can also take you to their Tahr and Chamois properties on the East Coast where they spot game right from the back door of the lodge. The lower country is a large estate area where hunters can take trophies on foot or hunt from polaris rangers. Higher up is a large area they hunt free range animals on foot.
Lots of time is spent glassing during alpine hunting so good optics are essential.
Both the Bucks and Does carry horns making great trophies, although the bucks horns are usually heavier the does can be longer. Chamois have exceptional eyesight and usually weigh between 70 to 100 pounds. Chamois have 3 different color phases through the year, grey-brown in the summer, tan at the end of summer and black in the winter. Their thick black winter coat is fullest may through August. The rut is during the month of May.
For people that don't want to battle the mountains we can also offer an aerial assisted trophy hunt for a adrenaline packed adventure. Or we can take you to our Tahr and Chamois properties on the East Coast where we spot game right from the back door of the lodge.
