This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter comes out of generations of hunting tradition in Eastern Oregon. A lifetime spent in this country has produced a working understanding of how elk, deer, and other game use the terrain through the year, which is knowledge that cannot be picked up quickly. The guides are equally at home dropping into steep canyons, glassing open country, or working a bull in heavy timber, and they adapt to whatever the situation asks for. Fair chase and hard work are the two constants. For hunters wanting a legitimate hunt in one of the more game-rich corners of the West, the standards here are set by people obsessed with the pursuit itself.
HUNT DETAILS:
These are fully guided elk hunts across Central and Eastern Oregon, with five, seven, and nine day options depending on how much time a hunter wants in the field. The country varies a great deal from unit to unit, running from wide sagebrush steppe into dense timbered mountains and rolling high desert canyons, and the hunting approach changes with it. Days are spent glassing open ground, calling in timber, and tracking bulls that have been located, with the guide reading the situation and adjusting rather than forcing one tactic everywhere. Spot and stalk covers a lot of the hunting, calling setups work when bulls are responsive, and ambush tactics near feeding and bedding areas come into play when the elk are patterned. Both rifle and bow hunters are accommodated. None of this is easy country to hunt, and hunters should arrive prepared for long days and real effort, but the guides put in as much as the hunter does.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Lodging depends on which unit a hunter is hunting. Some hunts are based out of a ranch house, which gives hunters a solid roof, a real bed, and everything that comes with it. Others run out of a drive-up wall tent camp set close to the hunting grounds, which cuts the morning commute down to almost nothing and puts hunters right where the elk are. Both setups sit in good country with views worth the trip on their own. Meals are solid in either case, and the evenings around camp with the rest of the group tend to be a large part of what hunters remember.
