ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter has been in business since 1986, running wilderness hunts in Colorado from a base in the heart of the Rockies along the Continental Divide. They operate in three wilderness areas and pursue elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, Shiras moose, and mountain goat on fair chase terms, with limited whitetail, black bear, and antelope hunts available as well. The country they work sees low hunting pressure, which is the whole reason the action holds up. Guides and staff are trained in horses, equipment, backcountry travel, and the specific game being hunted. All guides are first aid and CPR certified, and every one of them came up through the ranks of the outfit rather than being hired in.
HUNT DETAILS:
These elk hunts are based mainly out of the Mount Evans Wilderness, the Lost Creek Wilderness, and South Park. All are quality-controlled areas with limited tags, which is deliberate management aimed at keeping the herd healthy and letting bulls reach maturity. Limited tags also mean limited competition, and hunters here are not fighting other parties for ground. The area hunted is large, and hunters have an excellent chance at a five-point or six-point bull. Those bulls range from two hundred fifty to three hundred forty inches, with most averaging around two hundred eighty. Opportunity on a good bull has run at ninety percent, and hunters see a lot of elk regardless of what they end up taking. Horses handle the travel in and out, which is the only sensible way to move through designated wilderness on this scale. This is high country hunting, so hunters should come prepared for the elevation and the terrain that comes with it.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
This is a pack-in wilderness camp, with the outfitter handling transport in and out. Hunters sleep in spacious tents on cots, and all food during the hunt is provided, so nothing needs to be packed in or rationed. The horses deserve mention on their own. Every animal used on these hunts is trained specifically for backcountry travel, and before any horse carries a rider it spends at least a full season working as a pack animal to get familiar with the demands and the terrain. That is more preparation than most outfits manage, and it translates directly into safer, more comfortable travel on the way in and out.
LICENSE INFORMATION:
Most elk tags in Colorado are available only through the draw. In some cases 2nd, and 3rd season rifle elk tags are available over-the-counter.
