HUNT DETAILS:
Unit 51 in northern New Mexico is a great elk hunting destination, featuring diverse terrain and abundant wildlife. Encompassing parts of the Carson National Forest and private lands, it offers mountainous landscapes, dense forests, and open meadows which offers perfect elk habitats. With a strong population of elk, the unit regularly produces 250–300 class bulls. Archery hunts occur in September during the rut, while rifle hunts take place in October and November.

Unit 52 in New Mexico is great elk hunting destination, located in the San Juan Mountains and featuring both public and private lands. Its rugged terrain, dense forests, and high elevations create prime hunting conditions. The diverse landscape of mountains, canyons, and meadows provides excellent elk habitats, supporting healthy populations of elk. The unit regularly produces 250–300+ class bulls. Archery hunts are held in September during the rut, and rifle hunts follow in October.

Unit 49 in northwest New Mexico is an overlooked elk hunting destination, offering excellent trophy potential. Located within the Carson National Forest and surrounding private lands, it features diverse terrain, including mountains, forests, and meadows which makes for ideal elk habitat. The unit is known for producing larger, mature bulls in the 280-320+ range. Archery season occurs in September, while rifle hunts take place in October. LICENSE PROCESS:
New Mexico uses a random draw system, giving all hunters an equal chance, with allocations divided among residents, non-residents, and outfitters. Each year, an application window opens, typically in February, allowing hunters to apply online

Hunters can apply for hunting permits (licenses) using an outfitter number if they plan to hunt with a licensed outfitter. This number allows outfitters to apply for hunting permits on behalf of their clients, simplifying the process for those who are utilizing professional guide services. Using the outfitter number will increase your chances of drawing a permit.
