ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter was established in the late 1990s and works out of Elko and Ely, Nevada. It began the way most family operations do, with a handful of clients and two guides, and has since grown into one of the largest full-time outfitting businesses in the state. What has not changed is the way clients are treated. The small operation attitude survived the growth, which is a large part of why hunters book again year after year. Decades in Nevada have given the guides a working familiarity with the state's country and game that newer operations cannot match. The aim on every hunt is a good experience first and, ideally, an animal worth remembering.

HUNT DETAILS:
Black bear hunting in Nevada is done behind hounds, and this outfitter has both the dogs and the experience to make it work. The state's bear population is well managed and has been growing, which has opened up an opportunity most hunters do not associate with Nevada at all. Bears here live in the mountains, and the country is remote and hard to cover, which is a large part of why hounds are the method of choice. Guides read bear sign and behavior, put the dogs on a workable track, and then the chase unfolds wherever the bear decides to take it. That can mean steep, broken ground and a considerable amount of effort on foot before the bear is treed. Hunters should be ready to move when the dogs open up. The hunt works for a hunter after a first bear as well as one holding out for a mature boar, and the guides handle both the same way.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
Lodging varies with the hunt. Depending on where a hunt takes place, hunters may be in a hotel, a camp trailer, a cabin, or a wall tent, and the outfitter matches the setup to the country being hunted rather than running everything out of one base. Food and lodging are included on most hunts, though on some they fall to the hunter, so it is worth confirming which applies before booking. Hunts run five days. Whatever the accommodation, the intent is the same, which is a warm, dry place to sleep and enough rest to be ready when the dogs strike the next morning.
